Hey @Beretta , serious question, I promise Im not trying to be smart or insulting...

Was chatting to a Serb mate a few weeks ago and the argument he posed was that if Tito never grabbed power and Nazi resistance from Serbs developed as more nationalistic/ Royalist leading to a Kingdom of Yugoslavia rather than Socialist Republic - that he believes most Croats would have developed leftist leanings... Any merit in the thought or is the big bastard talking shit? Short question, do you hate Communism because it is associated with Serbs, or Serbs because they are associated with Communism?

And obvs this is a massive generalisation...
So to answer your question as straight forward as I can, your mate is suggesting or implying that Croats would of rather the Kingdom of Yugoslavia rather than a socialist republic?

Yugoslavia (1918–1941) was a Serb-dominated royalist state. Many Croats experienced it as centralized, authoritarian, and dismissive of Croatian autonomy. Because of that, Croat opposition movements split: Some went radical right (Ustaše), Others went left (Croatian communists, trade unions, anti-monarchists)

So yes — anti-Serb royal centralism did push some Croats toward the left, but it also pushed many toward nationalism, not socialism.

Communism was disliked mainly because: It suppressed nationalism, it repressed the Church, it crushed political pluralism. People came to associate communism and Yugoslavia with Serbian power.

I guess Croatian politics were never “naturally” left or right — they were reactive.

Appreciate your reply mate, sincerely. That is something I often suspected but couldn't have an opinion on first hand..

So not a Red Star Belgrade fan then? 😁

We absolutely beat them with Aussie abroad news. We have two pages they have nothing so far.

A league discussion is where they get more discussion then us
yeah our matchthreads really need to improve

only matchthreads we have are socceroos/tillies/junior national teams and south melbourne games

We also beat a league reddit on having absurdly aggressive political threads, though are still lagging football anarchy who somehow manage to be more trollish against each other despite all being on the same political side

Usually people only post either on the automod's dedicated "Aussies abroad" post, post highlights (e.g I post goals, good saves and occasionally clips from interviews) or ask questions.

They only do matchday threads for either national team games, A-Leagues/Championship games, Asian games involving Australian teams and OFC Pro League games for South Melbourne or any of the Kiwi teams.

To be fair, here and Reddit are both completely different. Here we can post "Nice block from Clare Hunt" or "What a goal from Adrian Segečić!" in real time. Reddit requires lengthier posts.

I mostly like that it is better archived on forums so you can access historically useful info

I wish younger people would discover forums haha

As someone who uses both (probably prefer this one though), the A-League sub does care. They block links to this site and I've had confirmation of this from a moderator.
people can post reddit stuff here for what its worth

both forums are free, not for profit and run by volunteers so no point being precious

100% agree. NPL match threads on Reddit are lacking too though. It's probably partly because Reddit has an automod that makes them (except for OFC Pro League ones which are done by one user).

We also beat a league reddit on having absurdly aggressive political threads, though are still lagging football anarchy who somehow manage to be more trollish against each other despite all being on the same political side
Reddit is insanely political, but here there's a dedicated politics thread which people can choose to look at. On Reddit posts that are remotely political (e.g funding for X from Y person and Z party, players saying XYZ, etc) can easily get political. G&GFC is also more diverse politically by the looks of it. Reddit is very left-leaning and progressive so if you're conservative or even just right-leaning or even centrist that can speak problems. Instagram is much more diverse politically than Reddit even in young people's spaces on there.

One thing I do think we should do is try and grow the site. I've tried messaging a few users on Reddit (since a straight up promo on the r/A-League sub would probably get me banned as it would break the subreddit rules and would be linking to a secretly banned site), but they've either not responded or don't allow PMs (Reddit calls DMs "PMs", "private messages" as opposed to "direct messages"). The one exception is one user who I asked who was interested but I don't think has joined yet.

yeah definitely want to grow. I think if we roughly double we can start getting match threads for most domestic games

One thing i miss was an immediate match report after games on 442, but we would need to quadruple to get that level of volunteers and post volume

Probably take a couple of years to grow to that size though

Exactly! I think it's an internal disagreement between the mods of Reddit and the site owners (which I won't get into). But yeah we don't block Reddit links here, and I regularly post Reddit links for videos (since it's easier uploading the video to one site than two, and it takes a while to upload a video). We also allow direct social media links which r/ALeague does not (screenshots are allowed but links to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter/X are banned; not sure why but a few subs banned Twitter links because of Elon Musk and Donald Trump).

How would we possibly be able to grow the site? Ads are an option but r/ALeague won't allow those (r/Matildas, r/Socceroos and the club subs do though, though they are way less active than r/ALeague which is the chief subreddit for anything Aussie soccer-related). Redditors often don't allow PMs either or don't check them often (on the mobile website, which I use when on my phone, PMs or notices from mods (e.g ban notices) don't actually show up unless you go to the sidebar which is why it took me a few days to see your message lol.

Blocking twitter is wild lol

We were on bluesky for a while but its a bit of a ghost town

Another thing that would be great if we grew is we could have an a league and npl tipping comp. We dont have enough volunteers yet. We could do shorter tournies like the oz cup and championship

Are there fb groups? I havent found any a league ones but found a "bring back the nsl" one. Admin seemed to have left it a year ago tho and its overrun with porn bots lol

Another thing is just word of mouth too. We thought about fanzines if fanviews become common enough but that would be ambitious. We would need enough fanview writers and editors that there are stories every day

Yeah a tipping comp sounds good!

Agree about Bluesky, nobody in Australia uses it. I remember the football subs were up in arms over Twitter but were debating blocking it because Bluesky (the alternative) had bugger all football news. Some even wanted to block Meta (Facebook and Instagram) because of Mark Zuckerberg.

As for Twitter, I don't really like it and I hate Trump and Musk but blocking links to it is stupid. Many football news outlets still use it.
