True.
Go to the top of the class for comprehension, LFC.
Initially they campaigned against it. I was knocking doors and staffing stalls with the then Leader of the Opposition and a Leg Co, amongst others , taking petitions to voters to sign against it. There were also Labor Party car stickers against the stadium. I had one on my car and got heaps to sign petitions.
Right from the top, with people smiling as they told me, there was ostensibly a plan where the Feds put so many provisions that the state Libs could not meet, the Feds would use the money for community based projects - housing, health and education. They would blame the Rockcliff Lib Tas govt, for being incompetent.
Then the Parl Labor Party flipped. The leader was changed. Out of step with the grassroots members. We also have a few union leaders who've wanted the stadium. One leader wouldn't speak to me for a month after telling said person how pissed off many unionists were with said person!
Then said person stood for govt - and copped it everywhere for said person's views supporting the stadium. Said person also got far less votes than anticipated.
A good mate of mine and I have barely spoken to each other for years, given his strident campaign for it. His FB page has been like a war between pro and anti stadium advocates.
What some MPs have said at rallies is the government should never have let this issue have become so divisive. We had Leg Cos crying as they were speaking in the upper house yesterday, mainly independents, because of how polarised the views are of their constituents - passionate one way or the other. They don't have a party network to alleviate the stress of direct voter contact.
IMO, and a few MPs I know think there is merit to the argument, that the Libs always have a wedge issue to air to galvanise their enemies - and to shore up support from their core base. Anti- protest laws, cable car project on the mountain, salmon industry, native forest logging, amalgamation of councils - whilst they quietly get on with the work of governing the state for vested interests and donors.
The progenitor of the stadium/AFL idea was Peter Gutwein former premier. 4 days before he resigned, he decided he wanted to be a Tas AFL club Pres. He tool the shoddy team/stadium concept to the AFL and they gleefully accepted, as he sold the state out and committed to stadium debt.
Progressive Lord Mayor of Hobart, Anna Reynolds, has just released a public statement talking about how participation in a lot of other sports, including soccer/football, is much higher than AFL, and that all other sports will lose funding to AFL.
I've got Xmas union drinks tonight, with most of the key stakeholders involved attending. It could be a really acrimonious affair, with so many polarising views on the stadium. particularly with a few drinks consumed. People will be jubilant, or really pissed off, or there will be a few neutrals. Sadly, there is usually a great deal of camaraderie at these events.
Whereas Albo usually governs for what is loosely defined as all Aussies, him calling for a vote for the stadium has infuriated many Labor Party voters and stakeholders. He could cough up Fed money and the stadium could be sited somewhere far more suitable than Mac Point.
All for an extra 3 AFL games a year than occur currently at Bellerive Oval. Insane!
looks very passionate! Next two weeks are taken up but might contact her after the womens asian cup?Victoria Morton has recently stepped down as president of South Hobart and she's started writing some interesting articles on the sport, letting loose and detailing some of the behind the scenes things. Well worth reading and maybe Victoria would be an excellent guest for the pod @grazorblade . I'll paste links to some of the topics/articles below.
One thing that got me fuming was funding, and we all know how much of the pie the AFL receives:
Over 12 years:
AFL: $144m / 21,002 participants ≈ $6,857 per participant over 12 years
Football baseline: $5.55m / 31,278 participants ≈ $177 per participant over 12 years

Obviously she is a very passionate football (ex) administrator and a very passionate advocate for the game in Tasmania.looks very passionate! Next two weeks are taken up but might contact her after the womens asian cup?
I am also pretty critical of pignata, would love her to take the reignsObviously she is a very passionate football (ex) administrator and a very passionate advocate for the game in Tasmania.
She should be Tasmania Football CEO as Pignata doesn’t seem to be doing a lot for football down there.
It is a question of state debt and site, LFC.I imaging it would have been a good kick in the guts being such a devoted Red party supporter
I am not surprised by the Uturns - incl your Union outlook - they get a massive cash cow project down there.
Albo, the accidental party leader, putting aside the useless Libs so have Labour been leadership wise, I have fam in business for decades around his electorate, has always considered him a bumbling goose, who else in the party was there to lead at the time said it all to me watching from the sidelines.
How did your Union Xmas gathering go ?
If one rang Football Tas, there used to be receptionists answering the phone.Obviously she is a very passionate football (ex) administrator and a very passionate advocate for the game in Tasmania.

there's nothing to underestimate - when your opposition is hopeless/weak/can't read the room it fell on his lap mind you preferences got him over the line bigtime, as for leadership, I'm waiting. Ah so you've gone the independant route like so many before, part of the problem today. Many have underestimated Albo. I left the party some time ago.
they expect the greedy boomer to "shout" because ma and pa paid their path as well as housed them into their late 20's onUnion Xmas gathering - not many of the Millennials and youth understand the concept of 'shouting'. Ha ha.
Like I said aboveI shouted a lot of beer/wine/etc. The recipients sat on their drink for the whole night, without reciprocation. Only those over the age of 50 reciprocated shouts! Only a couple of the younger gen have any drinking talent! I've recruited plenty for theTas Craft Beer Assoc from older unionist drinkers.
Happy to be surrounded by young women at social occasions I'll bring my capitilist grim reaper pitch fork for their "selfies"Might have to get the likes of you surrounded by unionists at the monthly events, LFC! These days most are young women who don't drink much alcohol. Their phones are never far away!
It brings the question of why you ever joined Labor? Each to their own, it would be hypocritical of me to shit on someone for their politics when I keep criticising Redditors for literal abuse of people who aren't on the left.It is a question of state debt and site, LFC.

Pignata says they'll play at the new Macquarie Point stadium if the government helps fund the club:
Property mogul Harry Stamoulis is worth $626 million and was ranked at no. 95 in the 2016 BRW rich list, while car park king Belteky also has deep pockets.
The bid proposes that games be split between Hobart’s Blundstone Arena and Launceston’s Aurora Stadium until North Hobart Oval is redeveloped
Tasmania has 12,500 registered players – 9,000 of whom are aged between six and 12 – a participation rate which exceeds that of the AFL, which has 11,500.
Palmer believes a new entity would attract average crowds of around 8000 to 10,000
Gallop revealed the desires of networks would partly dictate where the governing body chooses to introduce those teams, on the premise that a deal's value could differ vastly depending whether a new franchise is based in southern Sydney, Brisbane or Tasmania. "We want them (broadcasters) to indicate when they come to us their attitude to not only expansion, but expansion where," Gallop said.
"I've said for some time, expansion is more than the ability to set up a sustainable operation in a geographical location - that's only half the equation," he said. "The other half of the equation is adding value to the whole competition and the game. (So they chose Macarthur and Western)
