What? Am I missing something they only play cricket in like 12 countries and only a few really dominate. Football is played everywhere
The CEO and Sec of Tas Cricket were telling a couple of mates and me, all members, that T20 is taking off in the USA and Canada with the Indian diaspora.
As Grazor has said upsets occur. In the last T20 World Cup, Afghanistan knocked Aus out in the semi-final.
Looking at the big Test countries playing cricket they are:
India
Aus
South Africa
England
Pakistan
New Zealand
West Indies
Sri Lanka
Then one adds middle ranking Test countries:
Bangladesh
Zimbabwe
Ireland
Afghanistan
Adding proficient T20 countries:
Scotland
Netherlands ( a lot of South African players have Dutch heritage)
Kenya
Namibia
USA (Indian and West Indies expats)
Canada (Indian and West Indies expats).
There might be more depth in world Basketball, but Cricket is easily the second most popular sport after football. I've researched it a fair bit. The proficient T20 countries ( who don't play Test cricket) are improving fast, and are a threat to anyone.
These 18 countries make up more depth than most other sports, possibly outside basketball and hockey, and of course football, where there is massive and frightening depth. Some cricketers are turning their backs on state and national red ball representation and are chasing T20 in franchises all around the world.
Also, pro cricketers in the powerhouses, who think they have no hope for national selection are making themselves unavailable for selection for the minnows if they have dual citizenship.
They also have T20 World Champs every 2 years. It is the only time I follow the sport.
