The Australian National Football Team General Discussion*OFFICIAL*

Should there be concern around Teague running back to the A-league so quickly? He dominated the league last year and then didn;t fire a shot in Europe in this stint. Is the gap that big?

It's a poor look both him and Arzani can't make an impact in europe, even in the lesser leagues over there.

The last three Australian Johnny Warren medalists ended up 1. Benched in Scotland 2. Playing in the Dutch 2nd Division and 3. Before he came back to the A-league, playing in the Saudi league (I think for a relegated team, but could be wrong). So yes, I there is a bigger gap than we realise.

The other thing to add is the endless injuries or guys who have gone 50 games undercooked and will play in youth teams for a couple of years.

However, there have been a few positives with Balard, Segecic and RBR.

These are desperate plays.

I don't think it is a poor reflection on the League - probably more of a poor reflection on them.
1)They probably think they are better than they are.
2) Rather than toughing it out or finding an appropriate club OS they have taken the easy way out.

BTW they are not the only two.

On the other hand I have no problem with Duke coming back. His main leagues are the J leagues. He needs game time and will almost certainly be picked for the World Cup but the J Leagues are re-aligning. He may head back to Japan post World Cup.

I'm not sure there's a gap technically. But a lot of our guys going overseas are quite dainty compared to hardened European players. Maybe it's our harsh summers, but our guys are super trim and athletic but not strong. Sega and Irankunda are decent examples of meatballs being able to handle the physicality. I could be way off but it's just something I noticed.

Duke is 35.

Teague is 23. He has come back twice from poor stints in Europe. I agree on your points. Its the easy way out. Ex Socceroos have said this publically in the past. The A-league is a safety net for players who know they can come back and make a decent wage instead of toughing it out.

Arzani is such a waste of talent.

Good points here. The gap is widening.

Young players can get trapped in the A-league now. Need to go to Europe younger

I feel like Australian football is still stuck in flawed and disproven research that was pushed very heavily by the AIS in the 1990’s that weight training under the age of 18 stunts your growth.

A quick look at the NRL should be enough of a visual confirmation to show that isn’t true.

I reckon go early (17-18) or go when you have 60-70+ games and have been A-league first choice for 2 seasons like Metcalfe, Bos, Balard, O’Neill. The guys who go after 1/2 an A-league season at 20 seem to succeed the least.

I don't begrudge them going - just coming back. When you are 20 and not earning much and you have the chance for big money you are going to take it. This is not a normal career path. Realistically you could get a career ending injury any time - so if the chance comes take it. But if it doesn't work out there work harder - find a more appropriate club.

I would add that they would need to be regular starters. Arzani was always a sub for MC. Warren Joyce wasn't overly impressed with Arzani's work rate (about the only time he got something right). Kuol, super sub. The other issue is choosing the right club - Mechelen was a good fit for Teague but I think that by now he should give up on the European dream and either remain comfortable in the A-League or look at Japan or South Korea.

Many good points made by all.

I agree the resistance trained body physique in Australia seems to about big arms and chest. It's the trunks and ass that are your bread and butter in football, and keeping mass down low ensures a low centre of gravity.

Different dependant on positions but some great players barely have much meat on their upper body eg Palmer, Fernandes, Modric etc

Kuol is a perfect example. Imagine if he’d played a season where he started 25 games and went to Holland/Belgium. Imagine if he’d played two. Certainly a lot higher than trying to kickstart his career in Czechia.

There's also an element of luck/fate in these moves. The club fit is important. As is fitness. I think Teagues injury was really badly timed. Who knows how he'd have gone without injury.

Arzani is an odd one. I regard him as more talented than many who've done better overseas, but...

There's still time for him to make a major impact if he can just find teh right combination of club/manager/attitude.
Who knows what's up with that? The player is scouted, interviewed and signed only to be ignored by the coach. What convinced them to sign him in the first place?

I get not everyone is going to play and I'd hate to think it's a discipline thing.

I think you could equally point to less well credentialled players going o/s and hitting the ground running. I don't think many thought Sapsford would have such a good season when he moved for example.

Agree with this. You're more likely to succeed with some baseline experience to support you.

Football 360 just issued a teaser for an interview with Arzani. He seems to have matured.

Early career he seemed a bit immature and terrible injury luck.

I think this latest move seems a case of bad club fit.

I'd honestly be happy with him kicking about in the AL doing well and unleashing him on unsuspecting teams who'll underestimate him.

Realistically he has done nothing every time he goes away from Australia. He scores at the rate of 1 goal every 546 minutes in first tier football - including Australia where he is most prolific (i.e around 1 goal every 6 games) and provides 2 assists in the same time frame. He is a solid ALM player - he's not going to surprise anyone. when he needs to jump up to World Cup level.

I think almost all of these return to A-league players at this point in time is to try and make the WC squad eg Teague, Arzani, Duke

Maybe Duke but I don't think the other two come back this quickly if there isn't the carrot of a WC at the end of the season.
