People always have Goodwin on the left. In this system he has played on the right, so no issues with Bos. A lot of your other points aren't realistic given where we are, not bad ideas but not happening.
If Goodwin can invert and get on his left boot then the right side would be ok. I don't really like it though. Depending on the game he'd be good from the bench too.

What about this as an idea:

McGree - Toure - Irankunda
Irvine - Balard
Bos ------------------------------------Metcalfe
Burgess - Souttar - Circati
Ryan
Bos and McGree compliment one another. Irankunda and Metcalfe likewise. McGree and Metcalfe can both move centrally into midfield to assist.

It gets all our best players on the field. If you could support it with subs like Goodwin and Segecic we have goals from the bench too.

I reckon we need one of Goodwin or Irankunda on the field always for free kicks.
This is exactly what I'd like to see. The issue with someone like Boyle is he can't play on midfield but McGree and Metcalfe can go all over as can Hrustic and Segecic can play narrow or wide. It allows for a lot of flexibility.

Maybe under Morgan. Popovic won't do it.

Agree - would love to see this line up - Mcgree and Irankunda switching wings throughout

It's roughly around this. I still think Bos and Goodwin may smother each other on a flank.

It's too late to go to a back 4 and perhaps if we did that, Burgess has a bad game then we start panicking about not enough coverage.

Miller is the square peg. He's technically horrible. Irvine also showed poor footwork when he came on last night.

For me it should be Metcalfe who goes to RWB and he's allowed to roam and also drift central creating a 3rd midfield passing option. In turn a top fit midfielder like Balard or Devlin keeps and eye on that area and having Circati there is very reassuring.

My idea is that Metcalfe could roam as far as left wing and link up with McGree who's also moving around and then Irvine maybe runs into the box and the RW of Irankunda or possibly Boyle lingers at the back post. Potentially put McGree right and Goodwin left.

Trouble is we don't really have a decent right fullback. They're mostly wing backs. Perhaps a back 4 allowing Bos and Geria or Strain to get up and then that third tank of a midfielder for coverage.

Other ideas up top would be to have Sapsford peeling off Toure and roighing roughing up opponents.
I think that you are asking too much of Metcalf. I don't believe he has ever played RWB and certainly not whilst at MC. But I can't think of anyone right now that is a natural RWB.

He played a series of games at LWB for St Pauli. The role was hang wide but also come high and in to make a third midfielder.

Seeing the sad friendlies for teams after missing WC qualification made me wonder how we did it decades ago. I remember the question being raised if we hadn't qualified the last few cycles what we'd have done in the next windows. Not to mention potentially needing Asian Cup qualifiers too.

I knew we'd missed the WC against Iran but the Chile friendly in February 1998 left me confused and I thought maybe it was another chance until I was told it wasn't. We had the OFC Nations cup mid 2002.

Back in those days we didn't have FIFA windows like we do today. In theory you could get players back for World Cup qualifiers but clubs used to put a lot of pressure on players not to play international football. Often the team went into hibernation apart from the odd exhibition match against visiting club sides. It was worse the couple of times when we didn't even make the last round (1982) or the playoffs (1990).

Thumbs up Q !

Was so much worse back then. Club vs country rows and the rough nature of the travel back then and players also paying their airfares.

Taking three points off Tunisia! 👏🆚🇹🇳

🗓️ #OnThisDay in 2022, Mitch Duke’s brilliant header sealed a 1-0 victory and our first win at the #FIFAWorldCup since 2010. 💪💚💛

Popovic addressing players at Victory. It's an interesting watch giving an insight into his coaching values

Always enjoy these reels. Plenty from WC 98 showing who actually scored. 02 helps jog the memory also.

Interesting to note it was Cahill who was in front of Kovac when he scored. I bet the video analysis told everyone to be tighter in such situations despite the keeping error.
