And yes, playing in an official competition at any level does tie a players sporting nationality. The advantage of doing it at youth level is that it leaves the door open to request a Change of Association if the player holds dual or multi nationality eligibility.

That's my understanding of things. Please see FIFA's Commentary on the Rules Governing Eligibility to play for Representative Teams. Particularly Article 5.3 and Article 9.2 (a) and Article 9.2(c).

So that would mean Segecic is currently Australian only and xhanfing to Croatia would need a process.

I guess it depends how annoying the application is. Triantis went through the process. In a way it's meaningless when the window to change is still open. In the end it comes down to the player's convictions. We know these players are good and will likely feature for us in the future so I think we ought to tie them up. There were exceptional talents who are at risk of being lost.

I'm saying do it for every single person who can kick a ball.

I disagree with you on that. Socceroos jumpers are earned, not handed out just in case. If they are good enough pick them. If they aren't let them earn their spot. If they would rather play for someone else then let them go. They won't ever be happy playing for their second choice.

That's what I'm saying. They are good enough and most of them even now. I agree they need to be convinced themselves too. Arena is still so young and more inclined to play for Italy so we tick neither box at present.

Correct.
He played AFC U20 Asian Cup and Qualifiers in 2022 and 2023 and he played AFC U23 Asian Cup in 2024.

All of those games are part of "official competition", as defined by FIFA. Thus, to play now for Croatia, he would need to request a Change of Association to Croatia. Like Triantis did with Greece.

Because he has now turned 21 yo and has yet to debut for the senior Australia team, once he achieves that (assuming that he does) he is then locked permanently to Australia.
 
Someone like Overy won't have England, Scotland too? Swooping too soon you'd think. He has to get some caps in the next cycle. Tidy player.

Not quite. There is so much misunderstanding of this rule (Article 9.2 (c)), that it probably bears setting out again what it states.

A player who has been fielded by the senior National team of an Association in an official competition ie a competition organized by FIFA or any Confederation, can request a Change of Association to another sporting nationality that they are eligible for if:-

1. The player was under the age of 21 at the time they made their last appearance in an official competition for their current Association, and
2. The player was fielded in no more than 3 matches in official and/or non-official competitions for the senior National team of their current Association, and
3. At least 3 years have passed since the player was last fielded for the senior National team of their current Association - in either official or non- official competition, and

Those are the basic requirements. There is another one also and it is that the player has never participated for the senior National team of their current Association at the final tournament of the FIFA World Cup or the final tournament of a Confederation competition.

He's certainly swinging towards us but I don't enjoy that there's no official lock. This was particularly redundant in the Triantis case
 
I've seen a few interviews with Overy and even Trevor Morgan and there is no indication that he's playing for anyone else going forward...never say never but unless the ghost that spooked Triantis appears again he is ours for the taking.

If he continues on his current trajectory and Carrick is kind enough to give him some bench spots then I say give him minutes in March and if he keeps impressing then could be WC here he comes!

And if he gets on the field at the World Cup - yeah, dreams, I know - he's Australia forever, no matter how much England or Scotland might then want him.

By the time these guys are ready to declare for us these rules would've been thrown out the window again for something else inconvenient for us šŸ˜…
 
Too early to make a play for Arena in seniors? It's not like we're flush for strikers. Look at some of the guys we've tried recently in that role.
