The difficulty with kids is it happens really fast. Unless we are going to pick them based purely on talent (Overy style) when they aren't playing I can't see a way around it. This is worse for us when they come through at big Euro clubs because then they are on the radar for even the big nations.
Exactly. If they're good, the bigger nations will get them. Turkish players in Germany are different with their strong links. Our very young seem to have a jaded view on where they grew up. Turkey got Uzun which is a coup.

At this very young age and his circumstances it would've been a bit tricky for Australia to get him for the U17. I'll admit that. In saying that his circumstances have played very much into Italy's hands.

Getting him to switch at this rate is near impossible.
I hope this doesn't turn out to be a loss of Christian Vieri magnitude.

Very early days but this goal and image is all about the Italian side of things for now. Scoring at that age for a club of that magnitude will have struggling Italy hoping. Had he scored and opted for the Joeys we'd be over the moon ourselves. Whether he'd even get the chance being an Australian youth player leaves me doubtful.

Would Arena be considered as highly by Roma if he'd opted for the Joeys? I don't think so. There's clear favouritism if you play their games.
A good player is a good player. If he opts for Australia I don't think that would make them rate him less highly. He's before anything an Aussie, being an Italian second.

Maybe if he spoke with Wini Heatley who is also at Roma (for their women's team) she could convince him to be an Aussie. Alsssandro Circati is another option to convince him but he hasn't been successful in convincing Cristian Volpato (yet).

The difference is he WAS an Aussie youth player. He played for our under-16s then played for Italy's under-16s and now under-17s. Cristian Volpato never played for any Australian team.

According to Sofascore, subbed on at 80', scored st 81'.
Still one month shy of his 17th birthday. Huge achievement and clearly a special talent.

Already tied to Italy (played for them at the recent U20 World Cup), so will need to change sporting nationality if ever he decides he would like to play for Australia, if invited to.
I don’t know anything about him, but my guess is that he is another one who feels more Italian than Australian. Close to zero chance of him ever playing for the Socceroos, I suspect.

I hope I am wrong.

Firstly, I can't see him in the U20. He was in the U17 squad. Also, is playing at an A youth tournament going to lock you in? I simply don't know but I wouldn't think the rules would be that strict. Clarification from numerous forumites appreciated.
Yeah, my mistake. Sorry. It was U17 World Cup. Plus he has played in U17 Euro Championships.

And yes, playing in an official competition at any level does tie a players sporting nationality. The advantage of doing it at youth level is that it leaves the door open to request a Change of Association if the player holds dual or multi nationality eligibility.

That's my understanding of things. Please see FIFA's Commentary on the Rules Governing Eligibility to play for Representative Teams. Particularly Article 5.3 and Article 9.2 (a) and Article 9.2(c).

Agents would be in our young kids ears, Australia is isolated, would be much easier to play in national youth teams in the country you are based.

Projecting ahead would have a very significant commercial profile if he stars as a full Italian international as well........ all we got going for us is a easier route to an Asian payday.

He played for the Joeys which Cristian Volpato never did. We need to stop jumping the gun and assuming the worst whenever we have a baller who happens to be a minority.

We have plenty of options to convince both Volpato and Antonio Arena to commit to Australia especially since Jessika Nash and Jacynta Galabadaarachchi ply their trade in Italy, as do Alex Chidiac, Wini Heatley and obviously Circati.

I'd put Arena in the category of a player whose international allegiance hasn't been decided.
There is a number of them like that.

Cristian Volpato, Liam Chipperfield, Noa Skoko, Ayman Gulasi, William Millwood (16 yo) Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli (only just turned 16). To name a few. I'm sure there are others.

All tied to a sporting nationality that isn't Australia and who need to request a Change of Association if they decide that they would like to play internationals for Australia.

And looking in a more positive way, James Overy and Jariyah Shah are both now recently tied to Australia but presently retain the right to request a Change of Association if they decide that their international ambitions lie elsewhere.
