Leonardo Fanari, 17-year-old Australian midfielder for Reggiana U19, shares his journey from Australia to Italian football in an exclusive player interview.
Australian-born footballer Leonardo Fanari is living the dream of many young players — swapping the fields of Australia for the tactical battlegrounds of Italian football.

Now part of Reggiana’s U19 squad, the dynamic defender-midfielder is finding his rhythm in Europe while staying true to his roots.

Adapting to Italian Football

Transitioning from Australia’s game to Italy’s highly tactical environment was no small feat.
“The speed of the game and the tactical component,” Fanari said when asked about the biggest challenges. “Each game plan has specific tactics that need to be followed.”
He says the adjustment took time, with Italian football demanding quick thinking and total tactical discipline — a steep learning curve for any young player.
“They were already thinking of moving back, and when I got this opportunity, we all thought — why not? It was great having them with me the first year. This year has been a new experience since it’s the first time I’m living away from them.”
Having his family nearby made the move smoother, though this season marks his first experience living independently — another important step in his growth both on and off the pitch.

Blending Two Football Cultures

With both Australian and Italian heritage, Fanari brings a unique perspective to his game.
“I try to take the best of both styles and make them my own,” he explained.
He sees his dual background as an advantage — combining Australian physicality and determination with Italy’s tactical sharpness and technique.
“The speed, the physicality, and the refereeing!”
He laughs when describing the contrasts between the two countries, noting that the intensity and officiating in Italy bring a whole new dimension to the game.

Life at Reggiana

At Reggiana, Fanari’s week is built around consistent training and development.
“We train five days a week, play once, and have one day off. Sometimes we’re asked to train with the first team, and I also follow a specific gym program to complement my training.”
It’s a demanding schedule, but one that reflects the professionalism of Italian football. Every session, he says, is designed to sharpen both the mind and body.
“The atmosphere is very professional and serious because we’re all here to do well and develop as players. But it’s also light-hearted — we’re together six days a week, go out together, and have good banter. The relationship between players and coaches makes it a great environment to grow in.”
Fanari adds that despite the competitive edge, the team’s chemistry and sense of camaraderie make Reggiana an ideal place to develop.

Growth and Mentorship

Fanari credits several coaches and teammates for shaping his development.
“My (former) assistant coach Francesco Pisano at Cagliari and my current head coach Francesco Turrini have inspired me to become the best player I can be,” he said. “The Young Socceroos coaching staff and my Aussie teammates have also had a big impact.”
He says learning from experienced coaches in both Italy and Australia has given him valuable perspective on what it takes to progress in professional football.
“The speed of the game here forces you to adapt quickly. The competition is fierce, so you have to take your game to a different level.”
Fanari believes this intensity has pushed him to grow faster than he ever could have back home — a challenge he fully embraces.

Playing Style and Inspirations

For those who haven’t seen him play, Fanari describes himself as a versatile and technical player.
“I can play in different roles and adjust tactically when needed. I love fast games, pressure from opponents, and getting involved in attack when I can.”
Adaptability, he says, is key — and it’s one of the reasons he’s been able to thrive in Italy’s structured system.
“I’m a big fan of Zortea. I like his play style — a strong right-back who’s also technically ready to help in attack. I try to model my game on his.”
Serie A’s Nadir Zortea stands as his role model — a defender who balances strength, intelligence, and attacking instinct.

Goals, Motivation, and Faith

Fanari’s focus is on continuous improvement.
“My target is to become a professional soccer player, so I’m working on everything — physical, mental, and technical. That’s why I have extra gym sessions, mental training, and I always rely on my faith.”
He says success in Europe demands more than talent alone — it’s about mentality, work ethic, and belief.
“In tough moments, I remind myself of my goals and lean on my family, friends, and faith.”
Faith, family, and purpose, he explains, are what keep him grounded through the pressures of pursuing a football career abroad.

Representing Australia

Fanari has already had the honour of wearing the green and gold.
“I was fortunate to be selected for the U20 Young Socceroos squad and made my debut with the U18s in May this year at the UEFA Friendship Cup in Switzerland.”
Representing his country was a milestone moment — and one that continues to fuel his ambition.
“That’s every player’s dream — to represent their country. My dream is to play in the World Cup wearing the green and gold.”
He hopes to one day walk out on the world stage, wearing Australia’s colours at the highest level.

Advice for Young Aussies

For young Australians chasing their European football dream, Fanari’s message is simple but powerful.
“Work hard and never give up. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true. There are tough moments, but with a strong mindset and a good support network, you’ll keep pushing through.”
He says the journey will test every part of a player’s character — but persistence, resilience, and support can make all the difference.

Leonardo Fanari is a name to watch — a young Aussie determined to make his mark in European football. With his drive, faith, and family behind him, the journey has only just begun.
