The Newcastle Jets Thread

Well it didn't take long for the wheels to fall off, normal service has been resumed. Our defence is very poor, has been for a long time. The fullbacks push forward and get caught out every time. I thought Milligan was going to fix that, obviously not. Went to the game for the first time for years, nearly died when I went to get a beer, $10.70 for a plastic cup of beer! Is that normal for stadiums these days. Anyway it wasn't a happy day out in more ways than one.

Couldn’t make the game, caught the 2nd half on TV at home. WTF was that defending for the 2nd and 3rd goals? Carbon copies of each other, right back missing on both occasion. Shaunessy well off the pace as well.

Not as dear as some places.

In some stadiums, beers are over $12

There was a sense of optimism at the start of the year, with the Cup result and style of play. That has all but evaporated now amongst the Jets faithful. With the worst defence in the league and sitting in 10th position, we're back to where we were 12 months ago. We'll probably still get the 5-6 thousand rusted on fans to each game but the satellite fans will stay away in droves. I don't know what the reason is for the poor form but they need to stop the rot very soon or start preparing for next year. Already.

Why was Badolato (sp?) selected as a 9 on the weekend? Isn't he a midfielder? He seemed to be able to create as well as score goals from deep. Up front he's relying on others and that spark has been lost.

 I thought he was early thirties, lol. We don't seem to be able to get much more than 30 mins out of him these days, looks a bit knackered after that. In saying that, he would have been a better choice up front, leave Badolato roaming in behind, then replace him when he's looking tired

Do you think Milligan might have pushed the team too hard in pre-season and they are feeling the hard running weariness now?

Youth, organisation, cohesion and intensity were key factors in your Cup form.

It would explain the excellent form in the Cup compared to other aleague teams and the drop in intensity after. Sprint v marathon principle.

Adams became one of your critical players last season as I saw it - just the loss of him through injury would have cost you. Having someone who can score alongside your Badalato's allows everyone a little more space and time as the defence has to cover more 'dangerous' options. Despite some decent chances against us on the weekend a lot of your attacking raids involved one player passing to one other player so our defence was not often pulled out of shape. I may be remembering the game through my orange eyes when I say that.

It all sounds like a lot of excuses, but we have seen over many years that teams that train extra hard and start the season already fit and sharp, and playing high intensity football, often have a run of injuries that can disrupt the season badly.

Rose has always seemed to be a 60 minute sub to me (as in bring him on then). He puts in full sprints every time and that takes so much out of you. I have always liked his effort and commitment even though he has not ended up being a prominent scorer (17 in 101 aleague games according to Wikipedia).

It is the bloody Ange principle - except you even got your Cup in the first season.

You Jets fans are so demanding wanting both Cup and League accolades ;).

Good thing is, you know you are not seeing the best your team can offer at the moment.

cheeez, a bloke @ just 26yrs being questioned does he have enough in the tank in a comp that covers a challenging 38 + games a season, ooops thats elsewhere.
The loonnnnng off season must be draining for our Pros, pre season Cup games so punishing,
Man soft is soft outlook from the grandstands.
Come on seriously.

To be fair I am the only one offering excuses - and I suspect I am not actually a Jets fan.

They cost us too many games in the last minutes with their illegal bloody "let's play a Griffiths up front" tactics.

For Rose, I don't think he manages his effort at all - just goes full bore from the start every time. That is not soft in itself - he is just not a player who can sprint all game and I don't think they want him to come on and reserve himself to last out the game.

RIMB, I was going to say I'm not having a lend of you by the way - though I do re iterate the pre and post competition sure isn't a marathon.
Though I don't think excuse's should apply at this level and worse by a opposing fan :)
Sure every players input varies therefore this comes down to the coach and his staff how to get the best out of X right ?
When/where do I get the max out X player and has he the durability (lords know how you fatigue with so little games).
Correct maybe better use as sub 60min onwards.
IF they haven't figured that out soon enough they are not doing justice to their jobs.
IF the coach's staff haven't worked out and advised X player how to use his energy/effort smart well the other factor is a donkey is a donkey :)

Fitness shouldn't be an issue any more than it is at the other clubs.
Adelaide United had the second worst defensive record last season at 55 which was only 1 better than Glory.
I reckon Milligan might have adopted some similar tactics and practices with the Jets. Conceding 12 goals in 4 games would be very concerning.
Unless he makes some meaningful changes, they will get absolutely dominated once the better attacking sides start hitting their peaks.

I think that the fatigue comes from the lack of a long season. if there were 20 teams, then the players would adapt more readily and perhaps not suffer so many soft tissue injuries when they go overseas. As an aside the AFL has the same problem which is why they introduced the mid-season bye.
