Holman's challenge was being surrounded by all those other star players and pragmatic Pim.

I worked late the first Japan away game and rushed into the pub and can see Holman running in a circle hair flipping around and someone shouting 'what the fuck are you doing?'

He arguably responded best to Pim's system in the long term.

So what was the exact reason for ending his international career? Playing at Al Nasr and Ange came in. 30 years old. Ange didn't want him? Injury? I remember Kennedy got injured as did Williams and someone else.

Those France Brazil friendlies really did give players some hints albeit maybe unnecessary. Schwarzer was feeling it bit was certainly still of the grade for the 2014 WC.

Just not compatible with Ange and numerous reasons but I do wonder how a Schwarzer, Wilkshire, Neill defence would've gone with the experience. The latter had lost his head and skill though and Wilkshire was a bit on the rogue side by then if I recall.

He ended at the same time as wilkshire. Maybe they both felt upset holger was axed? Cahill was mad too

Yeah it's interesting as perhaps the senior players felt he was worth persisting with. Maybe only to their own benefit though?

Really dark times back then but the low point was probably half time against Oman at home.

The Jordan loss was dark and we were in deep shit until we came back to best Iraq late in the away game.

How many poor floodlight ME wild goals have we conceded? Something special about those nights. The ball still bobbles along on a hard surface with floodlights that make our gold kit look banana yellow.

those years I remember wanting to hold on and keep making world cups while the a league improved and the ntc+academies bore fruit. Weird to see the other side of it where the fruit wasn't the disaster skeptics were predicting or the great leap forward chearleaders here predicting but some modest improvement on the early a league graduates that almost certainly won't reach the heights of the 90s nsl products

in any case there was a feeling of "just get through this year and maybe the youth improve and take the gg's place"

Holger played some young a league graduates against south korea and won 2-1 but then still persisted with old players who were really struggling

have they changed the vpl system to have more best v best?
Have to be honest and say I haven't looked for a couple of years. Looks like they are back to 3 divisions, Prem, NW and SE. Which is better than it was. When I was looking it was just NW and SE. So we went from 2 leagues, to 6 leagues, and now we're back to 3. A move in the right direction.

would 2 be even better? What prompted the move to 6?

Did other states also have a bunch of zones around the same time?

It looks like the youth league structure mirrors the NPL-Vic structure, which makes sense. Can't believe how out-of-the-loop I've got.

No idea what they did around the country, never looked.

would be interesting to know, because going to 6 zones would explain why vic dropped in quality, but nsw did too

Quite a few threads complaining about having a league games during nrl/afl season

This hot topic seems to have died here and on a league reddit if im not mistaken? Everyone just accepts to have a proper season means going into nrl or afl season

Just before the ntc mark 1 came in jan allegedly changed style with our young roos. Foster was definitely on team new style

one thing im confused about, ange was the coach before this, wasnt he uber possession focused?

Also watched a u20 game v argentina we won in the 90s and it was a pretty cultured style. Those born 1981 to 1988 were technically weak atheletes for the most part, but it didnt seem to be our style at every stage in our history. I wonder why we have this self perception?

Jan looks like a super coach in hindsight given the quality dropped pretty dramatically and we struggled to qualify with any coach not called jan

I remember the ratings and attendance threads in 442 were a bit more optimistic then these days
it always looked like we were growing

I think actually we are reverting to the mean. Even today crowds are a lot bigger than you would expect given the wages (I give an analysis in todays fan view)

Brett holman hate article

Cant remember if i ever hated on holman. Watching old replays he was real quality, especially the rare time he played with viduka. We didnt have any other players who could feed the ball to his feet in the box, he really balanced the team and proved critics wrong

Plenty leap to his defense mind u
Shocking the scapegoat he was - until BH stated scoring Roo goals!

Craig Foster is a weathervane and always was. Anyway he's too busy milking whatever popular cause can make him look good to worry about football these days.

It was a tuff Roo period no doubt about that.
He’s an attacker and a lot of pressure on him as for all.
His strike rate sucked when in diar need and many times that shouldn’t e been put away at that level and we were chasing games so often.
Can’t help bad timing in your career copping the flack - that being a pro from and centre in the NT.
No excuses as far as I’m concerned

Tbh I have always seen foster as a soft dick activist that really wouldn’t be missed to me.
He’s just fortunate he’s one of the lone hangers on from before because there isn’t much decent commentators in the pond.
Such a snob as well.

be that as it may, I could use more excitement and passion in the com box.
