A thread for discussion of the A-League Women for season 2025-26, with a particular focus on Matildas players. This thread is meant to replace the existing A-League Women and Matildas at home threads currently on the Matildas board for this season, so please post about Tillies players in A-League Women in here instead of those threads.

Sydney FC's signings really paying off. We're looking better than last season.
Sydney FC definitely doing better than last season, managing to hold the reigning premiers to a 2-2 draw in their season opener but it's still early days and only time will tell whether they can keep up this form over the course of the season without being affected by injuries too much.

We've been rebuilding after losing a lot of quality to the overseas leagues.

Willa Pearson has a solid head on her shoulders. A lot of hoo-ha about her age, but I think she'll be absolutely fine. She grew up playing against guys, I've mentioned before that it seems to be a pattern amongst the best women's players. And I think the ALW has become younger recently anyway. Sounds like she's a chance of being lost to us for cricket instead. What's paying more these days, Matildas + WSL, or Cricket Australia + WBBL?

Cricket Australia and WBBL would be paying more than the Matildas and WSL but there's no guarantee that Willa Pearson will get a transfer to England and it would be very much a shame if she were to jump ship to and fully commit to cricket given how much promise she's got and how well she's progressing through the Tillies farm system.

Plus cricket also has the WPL (the women's version of the IPL), that's more money still.

A-League definitely not paying as much as cricket. It will be a long while before she makes the Matildas and starts to get decent money. And in clubland maybe only Women’s Super League/European Clubs/USA paying decent coin?

A-League Women will never be paying as much as cricket as long as it remains semi-professional but a Matildas callup in the future would be inevitable given her promise and how well she's been running in the age grade sides recently.

If the suits had any ambition they would have scheduled a Saturday night match with the men on international break this weekend

Melbourne Victory have a Saturday early evening game at Home of the Matildas but to be fair the scheduling has been affected somewhat by Melbourne City going to Vietnam for AFC Women's Champions League games this matchday coming up so there have had to be postponements.

Just read that the ALW cost the APL $8.7m a year in player funding for little to no return. Most players want the comp to be fully pro but the money and interest is just not there. Even after the world cup in Aus and NZ the local game didn't grow at all.

Government and the stupid admin didn't have a plan for afterwards
It's very much a shame that despite Matildas mania during the World Cup and in the period following nothing was done to capitalise on the legacy which has led to A-League Women taking a step backwards compared to its global counterparts and now becoming the least preferred league amongst its own players, in addition to the myriad of other problems highlighted in the report.
