Debate thread on all things A league v nst

So you ignore the warning Robbo and "play the man" anyway??? Why? You hurt my poor feelings..... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:
Haha Mono, something about pot calling the kettle black.

I have been following this sport here for many years too & have seen so much disappointments of false dawns, but I remain faithful that one day. The youth of today were not brought up with the Dogma of yesterday of 'wogs, poofters & sheilas', they have accepted all sports in this country, so many kids wearing football merchandise, a big no no in our day. I do think you hold on to that (wogs) a bit more than I do, the times are a changing, the old AFL & NRL only loving dinosaurs are dying off.
Football is too big & the world is getting smaller.

Wearing football merch was NEVER frowned on in my day, maybe Sydney was anti soccer but Melbourne was awash with soccer jerseys - Liverpool, Man United, Juve, AC, Inter, Brazil, England, Italy, Holland .. you name it. ... Long before the social media infleunzas made it "acceptable"

In a way, it is like a cat and a dog in sack, in a river..... Ive been waiting for the Sleeping giant of football to awaken in Australia for 40 years......
The one thing we havent tried is growing the grassroots, whether thats p and r or the fa budget being redirected to reinvest in the game

My friend, come now, Melbourne was more anti soccer than Sydney at its height. Afl is a bigger part of Melbournes cultural identity than nrl ever was in Sydney

It certainly was, the culture here dictated that for the AFL to grow and remain unthreatened, it had to be that way and they put all their efforts into utolizing all in their means to make sure it did. For the die hard AFL types it still remains that way.

For us here the 'top' became a badge of honor almost, it became the extension of the 'footballing wars', soccer tops were worn by soccer ppl only, not bc they were trendy, but to emphasise the ones that had no or very little interest in the AFL...

Yea to be fair the soccer tops right now are a purely a fashion item for many younger people. Many people don’t even know which teams top they’re wearing Ala people wearing NY Yankees caps without even knowing it’s a sports team or what sport they play. Not to say that soccer as sport is much more popular now amongst the younger generation than it was pre the 05’ qualification

only negative experience I had with anti football sentiment was my uncle who was an afl loving uncle banning me watching the a league in my room when i lived with him for 6 months

I took it as a joke, though he did really seem to want me to turn it off even when i watched it in the privacy of my room. A couple of times I urgently switched the channel when i heard footsteps on the stairs. I didnt make too much of it, especially since he was being super generous! But later i did wonder if that was a weird part of melbourne afl culture

Nonsense, the Eastern suburbs where full of them.

And this was pre backpacker infestation days.
Don't have to convince me, I had a closet full of jerseys... its your fellow Sydneysider who claims otherwise:

Hey @Sutherlandbear im eagerly awaiting yoir commentary of the 'massive' crowd at the 'big blue', you know theoretically AL biggest game?

I asusme you boycotted bc it didnt live up to your priveledged footballing experience?
I was there and I commented on the crowd in the A league section. It is not Sydney’s biggest game, might be MVFC’s, but not ours. I said on the other thread that being played at an uncovered Leichhardt , cost the game 4-5000 punters.
Almost 11,000 would have been celebrated by your club, the one you believe to be the biggest and best supported in the land.
