Matildas friendlies in October 2025

That national anthem performance from the Welsh was phenomenal! Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau is what it's called for those wondering, and it translates to "Old Land of My Fathers".

NEVS!!!!!!

So damn happy for her! Her first goal and the second game in a row she’s scored after scoring and assisting for Malmö against Djurgården!

Matildas looked sluggish and inaccurate. It was as frustrating a game as I can remember with passes going out untouched, passes direct to Welsh players, and passes back to nobody except the Welsh forwards streaming onto it.

Was the pitch heavy (aside from it looking like a genuine cow paddock with all the hoof marks)? At times it looked and sounded like they were trying to kick a medicine ball.

Most of our promising build up was lost to slow thinking with the time between receiving and moving the ball on giving Wales the chance to shut down either the player or the passing lane. The team needs a heap of time together to get back in the groove. Plenty of moments of good play but most of them were backed up by something poor.

Wales played some awful physical contact football in the first half - knocking our players over and thumping into them. It took us ages to get any momentum after the first minutes and we kept putting ourselves under pressure and in peril.

We got the win against a highly motivated opponent, which is no small thing, but we really made it hard on ourselves.

Was at the game in person and I don't think the pitch was heavy but the Matildas fluffed quite a few chances at goal throughout in what was a physical contest between the two sides.

Wonder how the Lionesses friendly will go. Remember we did beat Germany after drawing with Switzerland so it's possible.

I watched the first half, and the same old issues were there for the Matilda’s, namely poor first touches under no pressure, and poor passing accuracy.

I found the team to be more cohesive in their systems and structures than they have been but less able to execute really basic skills in order to make it work.

A broken record from me, but Foord is still at best cursed with tunnel vision, and at worst is simply a ball hog.

She does great things in the build up but if she has the 'gonna score myself' switch active she is going to keep trying to beat every opposition player until she loses the ball or has a shot of some sort.

I find her really frustrating because her strength, speed and determination are such great qualities but she kills so many more opportunities that she has created than she does something useful with every game.

She can win a game in a moment, but she has also contributed to that moment being one of the few moments that the game can be won in. You compare her effectiveness across the whole game with the positive team contribution of (I think it was) Holland for Wales and can imagine Foord playing with that vision.

Sometimes Foord passes brilliantly to create something so she can bloody well do it.

Should be another win for the Matildas but bearing in mind that England will be looking to bounce back against us after losing 2-1 to 10-player Brazil in their first friendly this window.
