A-League Mens 25/26 - Round 1

F3 Derby pretty much encapsulated what we want out of every game in this league. Lots of entertainment value and hopefully that keeps a few Mariners fans coming back after what looked like a dire year ahead.

To me I think you have that right - though you probably won't agree with the rest of my reasoning. Looking at it live I think the referee erred. The Jets player rode the initial challenge then felt a small inadvertent hand on his back and dived. To me free kick Mariners - yellow for simulation for the Jets player. But once it went to VAR the decision should have been no red card. Free kick taken, yellow card stands .
I pretty much agree with you, although free kick to Mariners and yellow card for simulation might be a touch harsh.
But in terms of VAR, that’s correct, it can’t rule on free kicks or yellow cards (except for mistaken identity).

From where I was sitting that is what it looked like. On the replay maybe less so

Rubbish penalty. Hit "firmly" my arse. My childhood coaches would have torn me a new one for such a woussy effort. Make the keeper work and don't telegraph your movements, his body was facing the direction where it was going. Meat and drink to any decent keeper.

TBH while not a brilliant penalty by any means the effort by Rose in the follow up was worse.

Victory v Auckland will get high teens (push 20,000).

My anecdotal evidence tells me there is more enthusiasm going into this season from Vucks than it has in a while.

Geez, I was out by a long way. I'm really, really surprised. atmosphere felt really flat on Saturday night. I'm scratching my head a bit

One thing that I did notice was that for Melbourne Victory, they had 5 City youth academy players who acquitted themselves well but MVC could not find room for Badalatto? None the less, whatever City are doing in scouting and developing young players, they are obviously doing them reasonably well.

There are a few reasons for that.

Victory are now unashamedly targeting Melbourne born players in their recruiting.

Also, I don’t think anyone denies Victory were miles behind City a few years ago when it came to youth development. That has changed significantly and what I am hearing from those on the ground is that our youth academies are now the benchmark (or at least most kids want Victory if given the choice).

Another factor here is the location of the City Academy. Casey Fields is a long, long way out. Kasey Bos came to Victory after his brother played for City, as travelling all the way to Casey Fields was problematic for a Western Suburbs boy.

So my opinion is generaru will win the jw this season. But I hate victory and city signing each other's players.

Victory needed to sign some exciting attacking players, keeping Vergos is just crazy.

Watched the BR vs Mac and it was a better game than expected. And Herrington can read the game so well. He covered spaces, managed the back line, marked players and stopped a shot on goal. Noticed that he has bulked up without losing his speed (not that he was the fastest player in BR) but now he can be more physical. Souttar's replacement is emerging in the wings.
