Ground Hopping

I've travelled a lot , but have seen no pro football overseas. Usually in the wrong season.

Pro football - Etihad/Telstradome in Aus, watching international.

AL - North Hobart, York Park.

NPL - watching, playing, coaching - Warrior Park, KGV, South Hobart, Wentworth Park, Kingborough Twin Ovals, Hobart Domain, Devonport Soccer Ground/Valley Road, Prospect Vale.

By the way - great app for something like this (I believe it’s connected to some sort of database like Soccerway, or FlashScore, as it includes NPL clubs) - an app to keep track of matches/events you’ve been to!

At the moment includes:
  • Football
  • Rugby (specifically Rugby Union, although NRL and Super League has been added as a league. International Rugby League games not supported)
  • Basketball
  • Baseball
  • American Football (including college I think - possibly also college included in Basketball and Baseball)
  • Ice Hockey
  • Cricket
  • Concerts
  • Coming Soon:
    • Tennis
    • Golf
    • Formula 1

try this. it tracks all your games you've been too etc.

great little app.

Dockland Stadium isn't too bad. If you have young children take them up to the very top level, it isn't too populated and they can run around like loons and not bother anybody.

Some years ago a friend of mine signed for Woking FC as a goalkeeper in the English Conferenc or what was the Football Conference which for those that might not know is the fifth tier of the English pyramid system. It's now been renamed the National League.....

It was a big step up for him because previously he was playing at Hampton and Richmond who were playing in the Isthmian League which is two or three levels further down the pyramid.

He was initially one of the reserve keepers at Woking but the first choice left and the other one retired, so my mate Eddie found himself as first choice at the start of the.season.

So a couple of us spent many Saturdays following him around the Conference League in England. Went to loads of little non league grounds like Dover, Kettering,
Bath, Farnborough Town etc...

It was good fun, some of them little clubs are very welcoming compared to the professional game. Nice bars in the grounds, sometimes the football was pretty shyte but we didn't care about that.

I guess the 5th level in England would be of similar in quality to the NPL here in Australia.

What was the best ground then? Any funny stories?

A lot of those non league grounds are pretty similar. They have a main seating stand and then basic terracing behind the goals and maybe a smaller seating area opposite the main stand.

Bath City's ground wasn't that great but the actual City of Bath is a beautiful town in terms of it's architectural style and the local pubs and that are lovely.

At one game, at Kettering it was absolutely pissing down so after 10 minutes we went into the clubhouse bar and played pool....

Mate reckoned he made about 10 saves.

After that game mate asked how dis we rhink he played and I said I don't know we were in the bar playing pool....

He was gutted! 😂

Haha that's class I reckon that would have been a great thing to do with your mates

I kinda liked the English non league scene.

The rusted turnstiles, the smell of Bovril and fried onions, the floodlights cutting through the mist, a handful of fans clapping a scrappy winner in the rain....it's earthy!!

I think that is probably one reason why I like the local football scene in Brisbane, the NPL and FQPL.

My mate the goalie played non league until his early 40's . A bit further down the pyramid system from Woking. He then became a goalkeeper coach and worked at the QPR academy for a while.

Being a non league player wasn't a bad life for him. He had a full time job as a gas fitter and was getting around £400 a week at Woking. And that was nearly 30 years ago.

Replace Bovril with charcoal grilled meat and youve described NPL pretty well :)

League 2 really has some great grounds.

Got to say some weird shapes too. Cambridge with a big gap in a corner. Cheltenham patch work stands also.

Walsall have a great big stand at one end.

Same with Scotland. If you go north east or north west of Dundee there a few lower division clubs dotted around. Montrose, Arbroath, Brechin City, Forfar...

Brechin City’s ground is a particular picturesque place.

These places are the heart and soul of football.
