The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

call it what you will, since the NSL died we have been in the spotlight on the national stage numerous times with all our cup runs against AL opposition, so a Bayswater isn't really gonna cut it.

Regarding NPL level, we had decent crowds against the following;

Rockdale in 2013 - 4k
Sydney Olympic in 2012 - 3k
Blacktown in 2016 - 6k
APIA in 2019 - 6k
Took 2k to Wollongong away in 2019

issue is a lot of the games are one offs, finals, semi's etc. which is always going to attract more people. its just the way football goes.

would i like more people and consistency, yes. But being in the state leagues for 20 years, I've seen it all. 200 people on a cold Saturday night against Canterbury Bankstown Berries, to a few thousand against a Olympic, Marconi or Rockdale.

So like i said, when i saw over 2k against a Bayswater i saw it as a pass mark.
Yeah I understand what your saying, I had just assumed Sydney United was capable of getting a crowd similar to South Melbourne etc.

We just gotta be realistic and understand these clubs don't have the support they once did Are they capable of attracting new fans? I'm not so sure, but I certainly hope so!

Like you said, I view this tournament as a "one off", hence why I expencted a bigger crowd.

i don't think we have ever competed with a crowd like south melbourne.

maybe in the late 80s and early 90s.

Far more Greeks in Melbourne, then Croats in Sydney lol

I just had a look and your right, in the 90s and 2000's averaged no more than 3k.

I think 2k is fine but i have higher expectations for South. We dont have the winter handicap of competing against 25 other Greek clubs, we should be the biggest supported club this time of year, our last nsl season average was 7,000 and we pretty much matched that on Friday. We gotta go big again next week.

If the weather holds up and the promotion of the Moreton City fixture is at the same intensity as the Olympic match, you could see the another big crowd of over 3,000 in attendance. They wont be pushovers, and will put a strong fight to win away.

We dont beat anyone easily these days so im expecting a close game with lots of goals again. Hopefully between 3-4k

I must be rubbish at guestimating crowd sizes

thought hobart was much bigger than heidelberg. Apparently heidelberg bigger with 2083

Nowhere near that much at Heidelberg, they had 1,000 against the wanderers and 1500 against Wellington in the xup, they're kidding themselves if they think they had more yesterday i was at all 3. Im glad they're being called out on it after they started flapping their gums over South on Friday night.

I think everyone did. I'm not one to spread crowd number conspiracy but if there were ~19000 fans total, and 11k of them were at the South and Preston games; there is no feasible way Heidelberg had over 2000. Especially if we then also assume Sydney United had ~2000 and South Hobart surely in the higher 1000s at least.

Attended South Hobart v Wollongong Wolves yesterday.

The weather was shocking for October! Average max in Hobart is usually 17 degrees. Yesterday was 9-10 degrees, plus rain. I'd been out walking the dog before the game in bright sun and it was a lot warmer, so I was underdressed!

The South H pitch was good. Far better than in July.

The score probably reflected the quality of the two teams. Nick Moreton probably played the best half of football I've seen from him in the first 45 mins for SH.

However, the overall technical disparity between the two teams was exemplified in:

* WW had players all over the pitch, who had better first touch and close ball control in confined spaces under pressure. Often South players received and the touch needed to be closer to the body, and then passed, but WWs were able to close the space down, ensuring the second touch from South players was blocked or rushed, hence causing a turnover. Or SH players needed to one touch pass.

* In general WW shielded and protected the ball better. Thomas James the central striker exemplified this, as did Tate Russell and Nichoas Olsen.

* WW kept the ball better, for longer, sustained periods while building up slowly. South probably had most effect in accelerated attacks. WW were able to play at slower rhythm, and keep the ball.

Can't believe a good AL Western U RB, Tate Russell, is now playing at this level? He was beaten twice by SH players, which surprised me. If I had been coach, Luke Wilkshire, I would have been tempted to play him as a DM. TR had too little ifluence at RB.
He was good on the ball, getting his head up effectively when the had the ball at his feet, simultaneously being able to scan the field of play to evaluate options and was slick in tight spaces.
Executed one superb Jairzinho turn as he received, beating 2 SH players. TR was often unmarked in WW Ball Possession, but his Right sided CB, Danzo, didn't see him to pass to.

Nicholas Olsen - superb player on the ball. For mine he is AL quality based on yesterday. Shorter player, with low centre of gravity.

Lachlan Scott - looked good at times and his name rings a bell as a former AL player. Caused probs for SH defence.

No South Players looked like AL quality.

Loved how Luke Wilkshire kept composure at all times in the dug out. Conversely, Ned Clark shouted all match. He has an indecipherable voice like a foghorn, that has no clarity. Thankfully, he went hoarse! I contacted him through Grazor for info, which he never produced after saying he would!

Loved watching live football at this level!
Thx for this I enjoyed the Hobart game

11,000 total from SM and PL. That leaves 8,500 between the other 6 matches (AVG. 1,400). That's not bad.

So we are going back to good ole NSL days when SBS barely mentioned the rest of Australia ... just Sydney?

The greatest 'lie' was that Norton Street in Leichhardt was like Lygon Street in Melbourne.

When I moved to Sydney for a year in 1998 I was staggered at how miniscule Norton Street was!!!

Maybe I should save my angst until after this thing is finished for the season.

Never was comparable imo, lygon street is more of an inner city precinct right on the cbd fringe, Leichhardt is much more of a “suburb”. Either way nowadays both are so heavy diluted that I’d hardly even call either of them notably Italian anymore. The days of the Italian “ethnic ghetto” are gone imo. You can find good authentic Italian restaurants and groceries anywhere in Sydney or Melbourne these days, it’s been accepted into the mainstream culinary culture of the country. You don’t have to travel to the central hubs as you once did. And if there were a hub it would be more so the inner west of Sydney more broadly, Ala the inner north of Melbourne for Italian stuff rather than one specific suburb

I dare say it’s a safe bet your best showing will be away v Olympic. Hopefully everything aligns on and off the field and there’s a good crowd in. Will try to get there myself.

10 year ago south played away in the Australia cup mid week v palm beach I believe from memory on the Gold Coast. They brought a solid little group who sang all game. That was before the renaissance of the npls. Not many other clubs let alone traditional clubs would have been able to do that
Both times on gold coast were good. You'll find all 4 away trips we've done in recent times have been good attendance. 2 in tasi 2 in Gold Coast. I went to all 4. Am heading to Olympic away but won't make Newcastle for the above reason. Still deciding on Brisbane

Heidelberg never had any more than 6 or 7 hundred at that tiny little place.
