Long way to come for Kalik (now his Jetlag is even worse), Matthews and Botic.

I guess if I were a pro a may be honoured just to be called up but at some point I'd like to get on the pitch. No guarantees in football though.

I hindsight we could've started Matthews and given Kalik some time.

Popovic realises it was Balard's peach of a long ball that was the assist for Irankunda, right? We looked much more balanced.

Now to test a Balard Irvine midfield. Still don't feel we're exactly missing Irvine but the leadership and communication changes things out there.

It's interesting to see how most of our most recent goals have come in something of an instant. We seem very at home in transition phases and when we have a bit of space against an unconcentrated opponent.

4 of 5 China goals, 4 against NZ, 2 Indonesia, 1 KSA, and even Japan home came from quick decision in transition which see a chance present itself.

If Borrello comes in for Botic I get it but we're going back to ineffective options. Think about it, we've played Borrello and Boyle as striker in games when Toure could have gotten even more exposure (he's totally there now, no more what if?) and we've not been able to blood any other strikers.

Popovic mentioned 7 players on evening flights out of Auckland. Good to get them back to clubs quickly. Counted 7 from the EFL, just a thought....

Prefer duke to borello

Unfortunately I did not get to watch the game (will try on the weekend). But the reading the comments, it seems that the right hand side is the troublesome side where no player has really made it their own in the way JBos has made the LWB his own. Maybe Bennie is the solution. And a new manager.

Bennie hopefully by asian cup if we are lucky

As the Kiwis deployed their off the ball intensive Squeezing, Aus struggled to play out, because it was difficult for the Aussies to open passing lanes, devoid of a Kiwi being more then a metre to 2 metres away. This is very tiring too for the teams doing it. As is usually the case the Kiwis ran out of gas at 60 mins.

It was tough for the Aussies in the back third to get a player receiving the ball with their body shape facing forwards, and having a teammate opening a passing lane in space - devoid of a Kiwi closing him down.

Outside Iran's brilliant goal and astonishing free kick, I'm not sure he did a lot? Live I thought he was outmuscled a lot. It might be different when I go over the replay compiling stats. Popa publicly said he was pleased with Iran's defending.

Toure was a huge asset. His strength and pace constantly harassed the Kiwi defence. Like Duke, Borrello and Yengi, but the difference was his clinical finishing! The first goal was brilliant! He outmuscled his marker, displaying sublime skill at pace to slot home sprinting at high speed.

I'm hearing his body is struggling though. I hadn't realised he is still only 21? If he stays fit , we've found our first choice central striker. Last year he couldn't hit the side of a barn in the U23s Olympic Qual tournament.

Live I thought Circati had a poor game, by his own lofty standards after being made captain (which I predicted in a few years time, not in his 7th game). I thought he mishit a few passes and was turned a few times. It will be interesting to look at the replay.

Live, Balard and O'N looked similar, so early in the game I wasn't sure who was who?

Live, I thought Miller had a good shift. Just before Aus scored around the 57th min, when he was blamed for fluffing a ball close to our goal, I was screaming at Metcalfe to move quicker to support him to open a passing lane in space. Metcalfe just didn't see it.

Despite that, Connor M showed some more superb touches, carrying in from game 1. He made both quality assists for Toure's 2 goals.

Although he didn't get forward as much as Miller, I thought Rowles was okay at LWB. None of Bos's searing runs, but he was a tough defender for the Kiwis to round out wide.

I just wish that commentators, Harper and Thompson had the knowledge to comment on the levels of Squeezing and Pressing. It is much harder to play out when teams gegenpress with so many players entering the opposition half, like NZ did. It was well-organised too.

Popa wants his teams to defend deeper, with only a modicum of Squeezing, enabling Aus to keep defensive shape nearly all the time. The Kiwis were stretched a lot more late in both games, as those distances between their lines increased. This enabled Aus to play more effectively with the ball.
Irankunda defended well. He's quick and closed down space. Him and Toure are menaces together.

Has anyone got access to the replay?

Yep, Izzo was very poor with the ball at his feet, both games. I can’t remember him being this bad with his feet in the A League, but maybe he was mostly under less pressure then.
I thought he could've done better but too many balls were fired at him short and to his wrong foot.

Had an excellent two matches as a shot stopper, which is his main job.

Credit to the Kiwis they play a nice brand of football, they probably lack some depth in key positions but they building into a good team.
Nice brand of football? What kick the other team out of the game?

I thought they were terrible. They were lucky we didn’t put 2 or 3 more past them at home and with a second strong side.

If they were in our WC group they’d be at the bottom. But that’s just my opinion

I've wanted Baccus given a run at rwb for a long time now but it's clear that's a forlorn hope. Wanted not only because of his physical attributes but also because he's shown he can produce on the big stage, as he did at the last WC. Bennie would be an unknown on the big stage and Miller has to be regarded as at least a little suspect given his performance at the AC. Yeah, it's a problem position for us and I don't know who is best of the realistic options. I'm not totally convinced by any of them.

For me, Strain is by miles our best option but he's so often injured everyone's just forgotten about him.

He's the McGree of the RB world.

They have improved out of sight!

They recently lost to Ukraine 1-2.

They beat Ivory Coast.

I think these were the results Harper alluded to in the game.
This would be an all time NZ team? Also have Cacace and Paulson missing. Have they ever had better?

I wish we had given all three a run.

No, they haven't had a better team.

They've improved out of sight since we played than a year, 2 years ago in September I think, when Circati got his first cap.
