Historical magazines

You were on the coast? I just remembered the little one wedged in a bunch of shops where Woolworths is. It's now an open Cafe floor. Totally forgot that one. Fountain Plaza had a decent enough one.
Nah wasn't on the coast - just the one I worked at in Canberra 5-10 years ago was part of a chain/franchise that has/had one in Erina Fair, and their store manager was kind of like our area/regional manager, and uh... yeah..

Harry Williams. We played for DFAT.
very cool mate, our very first Indigenous player recall him well.
Funnily even way back then I didn't blink an eye of his background.
Always thought/think if your good enough good luck to them do us proud - christ I just checked he debuted @ 19yrs pre '74 Cup squad.
Ol StGeorge player as well in the '70's heydays.

Yeah, we were in our late 30s when we played for DFAT. He may have been coach of Inter Monaro at the time.

Great thread this.....

I was obsessed with buying football magazines when I was a kid growing up in England. And by the 1990's it was the golden era of football magazines in the UK. There was literally dozens of different titles in the newsagents and I would buy most of them at some point or another.

When I emigrated to Australia in the late 1990's I thought I'd really miss all those football mags I used to buy... Four Four Two, World Soccer, Total Football, When Saturday Comes Football Italia, France Football etc etc.

So imagine my surprise and delight walking into the GPO News in Brisbane City Centre and seeing nearly an entire single shelf full of those aforementioned publications, albeit a month or so old having arrived via surface shipping.

And it wasn't just the UK magazines. There was some very interesting weekly Australian football newspaper style publications too. ABSW, British Soccer Week and another very good one who's name escapes my memory. Maybe called 'Goal Weekly' that specifically concentrated.on the NSL and various State Leagues??

I also used to get this fanzine called 'The Farr Post' which was about the Local Brisbane and Queensland Leagues. You'd get it at Strikers games and it was an invaluable trove of information on going on of the local football scene.

What I loved with the UK football mags was the pages and pages of adds for, what I thought, was "exotic" football gear... Brands like Patrick, Lotto, Admiral, Umbro..... seemed like alien tech compared to Sportmart's wall of Nike, Puma and Adidas ....

When I was about 14 I was doing well in French at School and the French teachers organised a week long trip to France and I was lucky enough to go on it.

When I was there I got this magazine called France Football which is actually still published today.

Anyway I noticed in the photography that some of these players were wearing a French brand of boot called Le Coq Sportif so I wanted a pair and saved up myself.

None of the local sports shops at home stocked Le Coq Sportif but the old man worked in London a lot and got me a pair....

Despite being a right back or sometimes a defensive midfielder I thought I was fucken it in these fancy European boots....🤣

hahahaha yeah, seeing all that Euro stuff was like crack cocaine to a soccer mad lad at the bottom of the world.... I had a pair of the first Lottos that came out here (black boot with a big shiny bright green Lotto symbol) I thought I was the duck's nuts.... got clobbered by a mammoth 40 year old playing ressies and got brought back down to earth pretty quickly....

The Italians always had swish football gear back then.. Lotto, Diadora, Pantofola....

And the best tennis gear too. Fila, Sergio Tacchini, Ellesse....

I remember a guy in Griffith opened up this store in the early-mid 2000s of imported Italian gear.

My favourite pair of non-football shoes still to this day are from there (I think they were like futsal or astroturf edition that I just wore everywhere) - Kappa 247 in all black

Kinda looked like these, but no Kappa logo, just the word on one side of the toe section, and then 247 stitched on the other side of the toes

The Italian way, always look da best even when losing hahaha
Best BLUE in the world the rest follow eh mono lol....come in spinna lol
HAhahaha poor Italians got confused when arranging their national strip... they got so used to copying EVERYTHING from Greece for their whole history ..... it just seemed logical to go with Hellenic Azzuri. HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAAHY

They didn't copy your cusine. Thankfully. :P
Oh, are you sure?

I thouhg MArco Polo stole past from the Chinese and they ahd to wait for the Spanish to come back from "discovering" America to find out about tomtaoes... AS for wine and olive oil, the Greeks were bathing in the stuff centuries before the Iteys even knew how to rub two stick together to make fire.... lol

And please don't goggle "who invented pizza?" I dont think my mate LFC will cope very well. HAHAHAHAHAAHAA
