Sunshine Coast for A-League?

I guess it depends on your goals

If your goals are crowd averages u could argue we should drop macarthur, bring in one more team and close shop

If ur goal is better socceroos then you should let in any team which can fund it regardless of the crowds until you have multiple divisions or can link with an nst. For me its the latter so if there is someone willing to do suncoast who cares about crowds

The seasons don't overlap that much. When they do QLD RL one week A-League the other. There are 19 clubs on the Sunshine Coast. For comparison 24 clubs on the Central Coast.

It is interesting to compare Sunny Coast with Gold Coast. Much higher population on GC. Quite a few more clubs on GC (haven’t done the count). GC is in close proximity to northern rivers area of NSW (more clubs, more population).

GC has 2 clubs in NPL, SC has one that finished bottom and is relegated to FQPL1 next season. GC has 2 clubs in FQPL1, both of which still can theoretically be promoted to NPL for next season and at worst will only finish one or two points below the promoted clubs. SC has no clubs in FQPL1.

GC has one club in FQPL2, which finished top of the league undefeated and is promoted to FQPL1. There is every chance another GC club will be promoted to FQPL2 for next season through the play-offs. SC has one club in FQPL2, which finished bottom and is relegated to the Sunshine Coast regional league for next season.

GC has a stadium already, SC stadium is currently a small grandstand and grassy banks.

Yet for some reason some people believe that SC is a better chance with an A League team than GC? I’m not saying a GC team would necessarily succeed, but why would a SC team be expected to have a better chance of succeeding?

I know people on this forum dont want to hear this but this is the truth.

Inside the next 20 years, the Gold Coast will become an AFL dominated city. And 20 is being conservative.

Football has a chance to put down significant roots in a region (Sunshine Coast) that isn't impacted by professional AFL or NRL clubs. Being first is a massive advantage (Look at the Tassie Jackjumpers for a prime example of this)

Football absolutely cannot compete with the AFL and the NRL. it needs to stay in its lane, and this is a prime opportunity to do so.

I think that SE Queensland should be able to host 3 A League clubs.....

One on the Gold Coast, one on the Sunshine Coast and one in Brisbane itself.

Each club playing in a reasonably good for football stadium with a capacity around the 10-15K+ mark and getting crowds of around 6 -10K.

Gold Coast already have that stadium in place, Sunshine Coast has one in the making which just leaves Brisbane.

Hopefully Perry Park will get developed into a 10-15K at some stage and an A League club can play out of there. If not Perry Park then perhaps try Ipswich. There’s a new small 12K capacity stadium mooted for that region.

Unfortunately this probably cannot include basketcase club Brisbane Roar who's reputation is now beyond repair. A new club has to be installed as the city's A League franchise in order for football to sustainably continue in Brisbane.

Suncorp is out of the question. It has killed Brisbane Roar and would kill any other potential expansion or replacement club in Brisbane.

Look I'm sure there are plenty of football fans in Brisbane who still see Brisbane Roar as a going concern in the A League but as far as I can see the last few years it's been dire.

I just don't think the situation is at all fixable.

Imagine how much better off we’d now be if this had been the FFA/APL’s guiding principle for the past 2 decades😔

W/respect to the point you’re making, I’m inclined to prefer a 2nd Brisbane team(the Strikers would be my choice) before a side from anywhere else in QLD though.

Understand that perspective too. I think the Roar need a derby probably more than anyone in the league at the moment.

Here's a revolutionary idea... Why doesn't FA open the pyramid and allow Brisbane Roar to organically form a rivalry with the next best club in the city??? Horrifying I know.... Wont somebody think of the foreign investors....

Key term there is "should be able to".
Just because it should work, doesn't mean it will work.
Having the population and venues are contributing factors, but in the context of the A-League, in order for a club to work they still need owners that are willing to spend, and more importantly, lose way more money than they put in. It's one of the reasons Canberra hasn't happened yet. Can't get any owners on board.
Then even when we do get owners on board, how long until they stop trying (ie Roar).

How long ago was that again?

I think that the redevelopment of Perry Park would be the way to go for the game in Brisbane.

A reasonably full 10K+ capacity stadium would be finacially sustainable too.

5 or 6K in 52K stadium which is where the Brisbane Roar are at in today's world is terrible optics for everyone concerned and certainly puts a lot of people off going.

Put those 6K into a smaller ground and I think enthusiasm would grow.

Ideally a new or second Brisbane A League club would be the Brisbane Strikers but I'm not so sure the club would want to even look at the idea.

They are playing in the Queensland Premier League these days and looking a long way off being considered for the A League or even any potential second tier league. Would take a whole host of new investors to get the infrastructure required and the club's current structure would make this difficult.

One point though, if enthusiasm grows then you will be locking them out of your 10000 seater mini stadium.

You realise in 2004 the state league system was pretty shithouse and the NSL itself was failing?

I dont get your stance, are you saying that my CLUB should just shut the fuck up and NOT have any ambition around developing a pro/rel system that we may or may not directly benefit from? Why because there was no pre/rel 20 years ago???
