2025 Australia Cup final rounds thread

Have they really, though❓

And to answer the question, yep it’s very much real - the inaugural edition of the ACL back in ‘03 was the only one in which non-pro clubs took part. Heck, the AFC reduces countries’ allocations on the back of one club’s poor showing - they’ve done it to us and they did it to 🇻🇳 in the past.

Alas that was just another eg. of the vague/detail-omitting wording that’s a sad trademark of FFA/APL press-releases.
Daaaamn you might be right. Maybe I only noticed the "pathway" and not the "licensing" component:

On the introduction of a pathway into the AFC Champions League, Johnson told The Sporting Capital:

"What we're trying to do here is provide more opportunities for clubs all around the country to participate more at a national level, and also at an international level. And we think this change with the AFC Champions League slot allocation will incentivise clubs to grow, because now they have an opportunity to play both locally at a national level, but also globally in the Champions League.

"We think that in order for clubs to grow, they need to be incentivised. If the clubs want to participate in the Champions League, they will need to go through a club licensing process. Clubs all across the country, whether they're in the A-League or in the NPL (need to go through this process), and that is a system that the AFC, the Asian Football Confederation, has designed. And what it really is about, is about meeting certain criteria which are really benchmarks that our clubs can grow and aspire to. So we think this will provide a strategic framework for our clubs to grow into. So I think the clubs across the country are very happy with this change."

and YET...

For the second time a spot in Asia awaits this year’s Australia Cup Champions.

The Australia Cup winners will be granted one of Australia’s slots in the AFC Cup Group Stage*, meaning clubs from all levels of the Australian football ecosystem can aspire to compete against top sides from around Asia.

Arrfggggha shit just noticed the * ... FFS ,,,lol

*Admission to AFC Cup (now ACL2) subject to winning club meeting AFC Club Licensing Regulations.

Tell me about it😔
What’s so lame about this is that friggin’ UEFA have no such qualms; part-time clubs freely compete in UCL/UEL etc. qualifiers for the group-stages w/no obstacles other than the opponents on the pitch.

If it’s good enough for the game’s premier confederation, then howTF can’t it be for the bloody AFC❓

And the FA can simply say "its NOT our fault" cowards.....

I get the feeling that City don't rate the Australia Cup as a priority. Two years in a row they have fielded their youth team.
Nah, last year was mostly aleague players, this year it is completely the NPL2 team. APIA should be thrashing them but it's close somehow

I wanted to say this in the other thread, you can only play whats in front of you and IF you Don't respect your opponent you deserve being punished and your supporters at the same time suffer.
BIG scalp being reigning Championship Chumps, thats a good semi pro slap in the face with all their resource just as it happens in Cups everywhere.

Might I say Thank christ for the semi (dis respected) pro Clubs giving this comp the go and injection football needs.
Without them the comp is futile.
