Tasmania FC thread

Kingborough Lions coach Jon Fenech believes it is time for Tasmania to join the A-League.

The Lions hosted A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory in the Hahn Australia Cup in Kingston on Sunday night, putting the Lakoseljac Cup winners on the national stage.

Despite going down 4-0 Fenech said the scoreline isn’t a true representation of how close the match was.

“Well why not Tasmania? The way we played tonight, the atmosphere, the crowd, you know, why shouldn’t we be in the A-League,” Fenech said.

“That was a goal of mine when I was appointed as coach, I wanted to get this team to win a trophy and we have done that, now I believe we can take it to the next level.

“The crowd was amazing tonight, we put Hobart and Tasmania on full display and showed that we are capable of getting behind a team in the A-League.

While this thread has been a bit quiet, I thought I'd share a snippet from Matt Windley's pro/rel A1-A2 discussion as shared here in both video (1h23m) and PDF (161 pages) format.

There's a lot of background, but very broadly, he talks about growing the A-League to 18 teams, then splitting into A1-League and A2-League of 9 teams each. He provides examples as to how the system would grow from there. I won't go into the whole thing, it's been discussed elsewhere in this forum. While the system is designed to allow NPL clubs to apply and "make the leap" to professional tier, and most of the examples are this, he mentions:

Hobart FC - example of a greenfields club - "Say there isn't a single club in the city that meets the requirements [Note: I don't think this was a dig at South Hobart or anywhere else, just an example] but APL wanted representation from the area, they could support the creation of a new club, to join the A2-League"

And then.. "I think you'd want just Hobart FC in this example, as opposed to all of Tasmania, because what may happen is in the following expansion is that Devonport Strikers join [some complimentary comments about their appearances in the Australia Cup]" Matt also made some comments about what a derby it would be if there was both a northern and southern Tasmanian team in the A-League (A1 + A2 combined).

For context, Hobart FC is listed as an example in the expansion from 22 to 24 teams, and Devonport Strikes from 24 to 26 teams. They were only used as examples but it's nice to be remembered!

Couldn't possibly be a more passionate derby than Melbourne City vs Western United could it?

Poor South Hobart AND Davenport Strikers, AND the Knights AND Olympic and all the others... always so disrespected.

I'm not opposed to expansion of A-League and etc in this for areas that aren't represented already, or have no ready-made inclusion. Tasmania, Canberra, North Queensland, etc. But fuck me, if they make another McMelbourne before doing something like this, so help me...

With Tony Pignata turning his attention to a home of football rather than an AL team surely South Hobart has to be supported for a Championship spot

Or any federation boss holding back clubs from continuing to compete in their premier competition. But alas, some of them are still in employment despite a vote of no confidence against them for things such as that.
