"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

Yes the egg-ballers want to protect and grow their market share and there certainly is a cultural rump that has an irrational xenophobic hate for the game. But I think we have a pathology in Australian football. We obsess about them instead of taking accountability.

There are two things that will grow and keep the game healthy - credibility and quality. Not Star Wars rounds, grand finals in Sydney, convoluted salary caps or metrics-based franchise decisions that almost always go belly up. Those two things have nothing to do with any outside agendas and are fully within the game's control.

Here's a start, make the A-league a 40 game season FFS. It's been decades. Nobody cares if we play teams more than twice. Nobody cares if it overlaps with the colonial tiddly-winks international cup. Keep the gates turning and give the players more games to improve the quality. Herer's number 2. Fully align and integrate the domestic calendar.

The APL cares mate. If they could get away with making the same revenue and ONLY playing one game a year, they would....

Yes I agree 100%, the domestic football is plaqued by agendas, poor administration, victim mentality for the 50 years I have followed this game locally.
I'm talking football in general, not the top tier of football in this country.

I don't want to play 40 games in the A-league against only the current sides . But let's bite the bullet and expand quickly. 16 team ALM, 16 team Championship.

That's 30 games, then up to 5 games for the ALM in the Australia Cup, more for the Championship sides. Then a 'League cup' with the top 32 teams so up to another 5 games. Then Asian participation, finals, pro/rel play offs

Unlike you I have no ill malice of other sports, they are sports, my issue with AFL is with its administration bullying other sports and their media and fans ramming down our throats about its greatness, yes it's great in Melbourne, but it's a niche sport in Sydney despite its money and media.

THis is essentially my take as well tbh - although it's because of that administration issue that I show malice towards AFL these days.

This is all true but you left out the best bit. The on-field product is pretty good (despite everything) and the matchday experience is always excellent.

I'm in my happy place when I meet a bunch of mates at the Bay Road Brewery two hours before the match - swill down two pints and a schooner of craft beer - walk to the stadium about five minutes before the match - get into my favourite spot in Bay 17 and get thoroughly absorbed in a cracking match of football (mostly).

It was better when the Mariners dominated with the likes of Nizz and Balard in the team but I still love seeing the new kids develop into good players.

Bring on the new season.

Saw a Facebook post where Adam Peacock was interviewing Bulldog, Robbie Slater.

Bulldog said the game of football has never been as good as the Lowy days - and has been sad everything that has diminished since.

It seems the clubs got their way, winning the battle for control of the AL, then lost the war. Financial mistakes have been made since the Lowy FFA regime too. This has rarely been the case with the Lowys.

One of Grazor's guests on the G and G Podcast, SS or the other American luminary, stated that the AL clubs winning control of the AL are only about making money for their clubs - not making altruistic decisions for the game as a whole. Only profit for the existing AL clubs, namely their own.

It will be interesting to see what happens if South M are admitted to the AL? I'll bet they won't care about admission of Champ teams or second tier promo-releg if they are admitted to the AL instead of Western U.
