The Melbourne Victory Thread

Rhianna Pollicina is leaving Melbourne Victory's A-League Women side after spending the past year at the club before moving to Box Hill United in NPLW Victoria during the offseason, making 22 appearances for them in addition to finding the back of the net seven times.

Never heard of her; I only know the one whose fans call her "Mummy" or whatever it is

As for Jimmy Bartel, I'd actively stopped following AFL by the time he hit the scene so I never put a face to his name until quite recently; didn't realise how lowkey-🇲🇰 he looks LOL, I always assumed he was just another stereotypical-looking late-GenX/early-Millennial bogan.

There is a lot more to Jimmy Bartel than that. How he came from a broken home littered with DV, how he rose above all of that and unlike others in the AFL became a decent bloke.

Wow I didn't know that. I've always thought highly of him, too intelligent for AFL and treats soccer with respect. He's broken my heart many a time on the field because he's an absolute champion.

Bought up by a single mum in Bell Park which wasn't the nicest suburb when Bartel was a kid. He was always pretty down to earth.

Some key takeaways from tonight’s members workshop reported by Cameron Menzies who was there (has sent me this report).

Caroline Carnegie confirming second Melbourne Victory campus to be announced shortly, with the 3rd and 4th ones to be announced in the next year.

Club also confirms new away live site to be announced for this season shortly, with promotions for members, new pick your pack website live within a week.

Evangeline Victoria confirmed to return to AAMI Park some time this season.

no update on Juan Mata yet.

Caroline also confirming club did not ban concession items last season as some rumours saying, need new leadership in terrace after NT leadership spill.

Caroline stated MVFC is only sporting club in Aus to have a fan and member workshop, making it a first, but a very common thing for European football clubs.

Some key recommendations raised by members which had support were;
implementing a match day program (magazine) for victory home games,
more free or reduced tickets for members to bring casuals to Vuck,
bringing back attendance loyalty program,
A new MC for game day announcements,
Some members saying he’s a bit over the top, and more visible presence across media and socials.

▪️ I’ve said for years that the North Terrace(and the South End active-support too) should be reserved for members-only; this way the risk of any 'hooliganism'-adjacent funnybuggers is significantly diminished.

Another idea(think I suggested it in the old FourFourTwo forum once) is perhaps smoke-bombs/sparklers could be set off in a controlled capacity after goals(or just the first one in a match, at least) are scored, in lieu of flares. They tinkered w/that in MLS a few years back; from what I’m aware it didn’t take off.

▪️ The Vuck hasn’t had a dedicated matchday-program for nearly 20 years already, so it’s a most-welcome initiative from Caro; hope it ends up happening🤞🏼

That said, the A-League as a whole should’ve had its own matchday-program in publication all along, in the vein of the AFL’s Footy Record. The fact it hasn’t is just sheer bloody negligence on a professional - not to mention cultural - level💡😔

Shame, as Manila Digger going through would’ve given incentive in appealing to the Filo🇵🇭 community to turn out for that one.

At least Dirga is guaranteed to attend just because it’s an Indo🇮🇩 club, I suppose😉

off-season signing Harry Sawyer from Melbourne Victory joined 3AW Sports Today program with host Matt Granland (filling in for Jimmy Bartel) a short time ago to discuss the pre-season so far ahead of the upcoming Isuzu UTE A League Men season from 34:37 til 38:44 into the full podcast.
