IF I recall right with my sleepy eyes at the time the ref called it straight out, if there wasn't VAR all the discussion would be that was a "soft" call but imo when an attacker is being impeded in a attacking position IN the box there's not much argument.
Having available pics like above pretty much shows its a given.
 
What I'm gleaning from week 1 of the round so far is physicality, which comes in many different forms:
1/ Athletic ability (ie speed)
2/ Endurance
3/ Strength, ability to win the second ball

I think the most elite teams have a mixture of both physicality and techncial/tactical prowress. However the newly promoted clubs and lower half teams are going to be looking to press the perceived higher rated/more well resourvced clubs in a way to create second-ball situations where they can win out physically. Hull did it, Sunderland did it very effectively last season, Ipswich & Brentford all showed it as well in their games.

I think teams that have fairly thin squads and are light on the physical side of the game are going to struggle this season.

Though that has been the game last couple of seasons and more to me.
Winning 2nd balls is huge now when under the press for teams are sitting up high with possession - speed/ability winning back that ball from a headed out cross for eg your on the assertive.

Yep...It really does feel like a tactical time warp back to the days of Big Sam and Tony Pulis in the mid-2000s....

What it does though is it allows lower-resourced clubs to bully technically superior sides and level the playing field.

Well at least in the short term

The best coaches always find a way and they treat these tactical trends like puzzles to be solved rather than permanent roadblocks.

It appears to be in the box. The dome in the background suggests so. Then there's the argument of 'foul in midfield, should also be a foul in the box.' We'd end up with many penalties then but perhaps refs can also allow a bit more physicality in midfield and also wave of flopping.

An interesting video I watched recently was from The Athletic which looked at dissecting De Zerbi ball.

It basically said, and this probably goes for many teams playing out from the back, that going man-on-man in the press forces De Zerbi ball out wide and therefore negates the whole ā€œspace in behindā€ transitional play he tries to create by lulling the opposition into a pressing trap.

It will be interesting to see how it progresses over the course of the season, but itā€™s essentially why you need elite ball carriers/progressive passers now. When an inferior team decides to go man-on-man, your best weapon to beat the press is the technical ability of your players. That gap has narrowed across the board too. The press resistant midfielders are few and far between these days.

I feel the prerequisites for some EPL managers is minimal. Some might just take too it but a number have low level experience or just a small gig at a big club. A fresh perspective is good and I wonder how long the honeymoon will last.

mind you he's not wrong atm for a change, we will under perform thats a fact.
Sure its a works in progress for Adoniball but christ we have screwed up so much in player movements compared to the past.
Even Neville put his bit in about Wirtz and Isak yesterday.
Wirtz just isn't fitting in still for such great talent as he said, he doesn't know where to work on the pitch more effectively, that is stay up high and link with Isak or any else up front.
He's all over the place.
We need a legit 6 full stop.

I think one of the failed strategies I see the big 6 do time and time again is overspend on ā€œPrem Provenā€ players.

One of the few success stories is probably Rice at Arsenal.

Clubs need to cast the net wider than they are at the moment and stop the big payday for the agent or playing the PSR rondo.

Itā€™s impossible that teams like Brentford, Bournemouth & Brighton can snuff out a player but the better resourced Big 6 canā€™t.

Hey the big 6 have over spent in every position over the years haha
I don't think Barca will think Rodri is an overspend even @ 30yrs.
Would you overpay for Vitinha ? I would.
Kimmich is a beast.
Don't think Chelsea are crying now 115M for Caicedo.
I beg to differ IF you get the right over paid player as much as I admire buying a bargain and they become great.
Fabinho who we haven't replaced since costed 45M - what a brilliant 6 he became.
Sure you can nurture one around your squad but time is money today.

Weā€™re talking Ballā€™on Doā€™or winner Rodri by the way. Heā€™s proved his worth.

Elliot Anderson, Isaak, Caiceido etc have a long way to prove their worth. Juryā€™s still out in my opinion.

Then you got all the overpaid ManU & Chelsea flops.

LFC used to bring in gems from other leagues. Firminho probably one of the best false 9ā€™s ever in the Prem for 30mil quid?? Fabinho a bit above 40mil. You guys used to hunt gems from Bundesliga & Ligue 1 and pay very little. 100mil for Wirtz? Deary me.
