Question off the back of this I want to confirm: Do any NPL pyramid outside of Canberra require a club to field all the way down to U13 to be in the senior competitions?

Yeh. Npl wa did, western knights denied promotion a few years back for not having a side in one age group. But this was a side effect of clubs that didnt have npl juniors , they kept losing kids to clubs that did. Total farce. So after that clubs that were chasing promotion (especially those outside the npl program) made sure they had a jnr team filled in every age group - even if they were playing kids up a year or two and the teams got smashed.. it fulfilled the criteria.. well done npl.

You’d imagine if they had to, the crest would be their go to given previous experience. Not that I think it’s a good idea per se. I actually think moving to a more boutique venue could be good for them if it was the right venue. The crest in its current form probably isn’t that right venue

You wonder if Hanlin is surprised by how this has all played out, whether he thought that initial player budget was genuinely enough for them to stay in the league/be competitive. You’d probably say the raiding of the u20s team for the first team squad has also had a knock on effect for their performance this year aswell

I think a lot was put into whether championship was to go h&a knowing it wasnt why would one take the risk of tanking an NPL season on the idea of winning the championship which they could not do even by adding on to last years somewhat ok side with the signings they got late in the precious window? It will be interestong how this ownership shemozzle unfold now...

No offence to olympic and ive been one of the more supportive interstaters but perhaps this reset is needed to either come back stronger or die off quietly .. in its current state its a foundation club in name alone and an embarrassment at that and it will show in another campaign.
 
When the current board have said NPL is a nothing competition and a waste of time, there is no surprise in all honestly. They want to move their energy into the other entity solely owned by Hanlin. I was surprised that they spent a bit in Jan, maybe it was to beef up before AUSC.

I have gone to a fair few of their games this season, it’s just grim.

Yeah but again that was on the back of going h&a in championship which wouldve meant the same for most foundation clubs bc its not viable to be in both (beyond u23 side).. thats far from a certainty in happening though...

I suspect ur right about hanlin and cementing control, its control of what though that he will get, bc ill call it now trabsfers wont win that team a championship from this point...
 
Fwiw re the idea of downsizing venue. I’ve touched on it previously but to be clear, belmore is 1.5x the size of lakeside and kogarah is double the size..I think it’s safe to say they don’t need that capacity right now.

I’m not suggesting they go play in a park. Playing in such large venues contributes to the negative feeling on matchdays imo. Taking a step back to take a step forwards might help. Would be easier to rebuild some kind of a match day atmosphere If they were playing out of a ground the size of Sutherlands or Fraser park etc etc

That cup game at Fraser was good, had a good vibe despite it only being a modest crowd because it was at an appropriately sized venue. Put that at belmore and it’s grim. Even at the height of the nsl 18-20,000 capacity venues were too big for normal regular season games by and large let alone now

Same effect can be seen in the a league with Brisbane roar playing out of suncorp etc

there's been no bid process since the foundation clubs were set, fa subsidise the travel, they get put in shit times like 1pm on a 30 degree day to avoid clashing with the a league.

if olympic think a comp with 5 teams from sydney & 3 from melbourne is viable for a full season, then it's no wonder where they ended up

You know where will suit Olympic due to its small crowds - Arlington.
Fraser is even too large for them nowadays.

Honestly not the worst shout tbh, probably better than the crest. Atleast it has a bit of character, closer to their traditional heartland etc

Maybe they can go back to pratten park, their home in the late 70s - early 80s. Site of the famous pitch invasion and riot v Sydney city Hakoah haha

When I lived in Sydney in 1998/1999 I visited Pratten Park as a pilgrimage!

Australian Soccer had some really poor venues, didn’t it. Still does!

Sydney Uni youth play there too. Strict rules on ground use. No midweek games. Saturday games have to be done by 9pm. Sunday games have to be done by 5pm.
