All these guys/kids idols have been the past magic test cricketers of the last 15/20yrs for eg. let alone hearing of the greats us ol codgers grew up with.

As discussed not seeing many young ones given a go having a ageing squad - we all talked about this post Ashes recently as well.
I sometimes wonder IF CA is partly to blame not encouraging or putting their neck out on debuting more young players in fear of loss's and the commercial/SMedia lash backs that are rife today.
Lets face its all about the revenue now and pecking order.
We have a lot of pressure period to perform let alone win every game tbh no matter what/who/when.

Or is it a fact we arn't producing period ?
I certainly don't see the cricket nets filled after school like I used to back int he day ??? nor do I see Shield cricket as prestigious or visible as it once was as well.

LFC you surprise me with your cricket insite. Nail on the head on most points.
CA is more than partly to blame as with them the bottom line always comes first. Bums on seats, without them they dont have the revenue to pay our top blokes the big bickies to play Test cricket and or both formats and not be taken in by the obscene salaries that global T20 franchises can afford to pay. If asked I reckon all our centrally contracted Test/both format players, would say they are content financially, but the contracted short ball format only guys who believe they too could play Tests, may reckon they can make a better living playing those lucrative T 20 global franchises. So they are then lost to first class cricket and the talent pool is reduced.

My take is that the impact of short form cricket actually is more to do with the batters coming into red ball games and trying to bat COMPLETELY differently rather than just treating it mostly the same with the caveat that there is no limited overs to bat. I mean at the end of the day you've still got a bat and they've still got a ball. The over complication in the mind is the real battle of batting.

Good points. I too maintain that cricket, like all sports is played as much between the ears as on the playing field.
Interesting article. I can bring a similar situation to the table. If you asked every world cricket fan who is the best cricketer, Donald Bradman or Steven Smith, 100% would naturally reply Bradman. But Smith has one over The Don, the 2019 Ashes as Smithy scored the largest percentage of Ashes runs by a single bat per every Aussie scorecard. Even Bradman was unable to compete with that as he had other greats batting around him. That is why former players said Smiths 2019 Ashes performance was the best ever.

We never got to see Bradman bat live, but Smithy, Steve Waugh and AB often made runs when the team needed them most, shifted the momentum, of a game, and kept the team in the contest.

4 wickets down for 10 runs, we are still in the game if Smithy is at the wicket.

A great bowler can do the same thing, shift the momentum with a few quick wickets.

I don't think the Aussie side currently has a lot of players who perform consistently and can shift the momentum.

Well a response most certainly by the Aussies at stumps on day one, BUT in reality the real damage done by our response with the continued age defying excellence of the one and only Mitchell Starc. That initial 5 wicket burst ripped the heart out of the Bangladeshi first innings and the rest of our bowlers mostly picked up the scraps. The clearly fuller more stump attacking bowling and aggression by using the bumpers worked a treat.

The batting sadly yet again just seem like cats on a hot tin roof. Like they have no trust in their defence and ability to absorb balls always trying to create and force shots that aren't there. All of a sudden Head looks nothing like a test opener and we'd love to have that counter attacking down at 6 batting around our hopeful new rock at 5 in Green.

I think Marnus is absolutely done and he shouldn't be selected in the squad for South Africa. The reality is the stats are clear as day that I genuinely believe his early career success was a large reason due to how many dropped catches he had off his bat. I read something like 38% of chances were dropped when he was batting up to when his form went south. Maybe he's just not that good at test level?

It's one thing to keep an ageing team together but if your first drop hasn't scored a hundred in nearly 900 days then why the hell is he in the XI??
 
Well at least Cam Green can hold his head hi. Is this a career defining series for the big West Aussie as his two knocks have shown a new maturity.

Marnus has to have played his last Test, not scored a century in what two, or is it three yrs and averaging a piss week mid 20s from his past 50 innings. Am astounded he has lasted this long given those figures.

Kurtis Patterson is the logical replacement for Saffer tour, but our nong of a coach says any of our A guys touring India soon will NOT play any part in the Saffer series. IS HE FOR REAL!!

If Patterson cant bat #3 move Smith back where he built his legendary status. He started his career there, let him finish it too.

Is Nathan Lyon done and dusted? Took a single wicket at about 4 runs an over, and was completely out bowled by the Banger spinners. He is no longer an automatic selection which has to say something. In Sth Africa, where were are heading next, he averages an unflattering @39.6 with only 28 w from nine matches. So not a happy hunting ground for him.

WE can no longer have 'Mr chopper on' Travis Head opening, sorry Trav, so Bailey bring in specialist opener Henry Hunt to add solidity at the top alongside Renners. For mine Hunt is overdue a Test debut and he does have a technique that challenges a new ball which will be needed against the likes of Robarda and his opening partners.

And do we persevere with Beau Webster whose dodgy technique has been shown up by the super disciplined Banger bowlers. If not him then my choice is Aaron Hardie if we wanna stay with an all rounder and , sorry Slug, he is a more talented one than you and is just coming into his peak.
