The Australian Championship 🇦🇺🏆

I think we can make some calls on other premiers now.

Oakleigh are pretty much locked, only really needing a draw from the last two matches.
Bayswater City have a 3 point and +15 GD break, they're safe.

For Monaro, they need to win and Croatia to lose for places to switch there.
And it's Sutherland's to lose in NSW.

Right now we have:
Oakleigh
Sutherland
Adelaide City
Lions
Bayswater City
Broadmeadow Magic
South Hobart
Canberra Croatia/Monaro

Joining:
Avondale
South Melbourne
Preston
APIA
Sydney United 58
Marconi
Wollongong
Sydney Olympic

That's a pretty sweet lineup, couldn't have asked for much better for the Championship!
Apart from olympic kingsway missing out got thereabouts the strongest team in each mf?

Both Canberra Cro and Monaro Panthers play at home to cellar dwellers next week so it’s very unlikely there will be upsets (but am not sure if head to head is the first tiebreaker though?).
Similar case for Bayswater too.
As for Sutherland, everyone below them seems to be choking collectively so it’s likely they will hold on…

Wasn’t sure what thread to put it in, but for those outside of Sydney. Leichhardt oval to shut in a couple of weeks time and undergo a redevelopment. Set to reopen in 2028. This is what’s planned;

10 million from each level of government. A small uncovered grandstand at the other end, some different change rooms, some main grandstand & corporate areas cosmetic work. For all the hoo ha it's fuck all really.

Clubs have another meeting with the FA this Thursday at 4pm.

I'm hearing the groups are pre-drawn.
Yea what do you mean by pre drawn? As in they won’t be random draw they be determined by the fa like a league draw would etc?

Pre-drawn as in, like last year spread for example two foundation and NNSW and QLD for us or is it going to be us and Sydney Olympic again :( It cant be too good news nobody is leaking anything.

Wording I received was

"The groups have been drawn but are with FA & SBS, they are yet to be approved or let the clubs know"

maybe we'll know more end of this week.

Those gypsies could do worse than playing at Leichhardt when the work is done. Inner West Council wouldn't object.
Suggested it previously. They played there for years. Some made the claim that it was APIAs turf. I think they have just as much claim tbh. Two a league teams play out of aami park. Let alone the likes of roma and Lazio at the Olimpico, or inter and Milan at San Siro. This wouldn’t be hugely different. Probably a more suitable venue for football at this level than belmore. Looks and feels better with a modest crowd in than kogarah etc

Again, maybe not perfect, but just trying to come up with realistic practical solutions

What’s the format entail for those of us playing along at home. Am aware google exists but am lazy

Same format as UEFA Champions League.

In Australian Championship competition, you would play 6 matches. Rather than the 16 clubs be separated into 4 separate groups, all 16 clubs are in 1 league ladder. In that way, you reduce dead rubbers in the last match day because you are trying to finish as high as possible in order to play a weaker opponent in the finals.

The main points are to NOT play your own federation nor the same team twice in the first phase:

10. I know we have another season of this, but I’d like to see the format modified closer to the modern champions league model for next year. Keep the 16 teams but make it the one league, and play a selection of six other teams from other federations, then the top 8 to knockouts. I know it would be a little costlier, but I’m not thrilled with the lack of spread amongst the opposition a team plays and doubling up in the group stage, and possibly a third time in the finals. Add in the number of times they’ve played each other during their NPL season (in Victoria and NSW) plus finals and Australia Cup, that adds up to possibly facing the same team SEVEN times in a season. So next year PLEASE scrap double round robin and playing your own federation in the group stage! Making it one league now will also make it easier to expand to full home and away in future. It seems a logical step along the “proof of concept” path.
