HYPOTHETICAL: Australian Premier League (Aussie Rules and Rugby League never exists)

Interesting thought experiment, kudos on the work that went into it.

Imo at the risk of being reductionist you’d probably have just ended up with what are todays afl/nrl clubs on either side of the barassi line being soccer clubs instead Inc those in the respective state leagues below the afl and nrl etc

Influence of migrant groups probably would been akin to what you see with Italians re Carlton or Collingwood in afl, to an extent with Arabs and Canterbury-Bankstown bulldogs in the nrl. Or maybe something more along the lines of what you see with Afro-Caribbean influence on football in London/the uk from the windrush era rather than manifesting in the ethnic clubs (day say they likely experienced discrimination over there which was atleast just as bad at the time)

As someone said the ethnic clubs might have existed but it’s unlikely they’d ever have become particularly big. The thing which party resulted in them becoming uniquely large in Australia vs other countries where similar clubs exist is that they represented the pinnacle of the game here for decades so accrued a level of support and resources which reflected that over time. In this alternate timeline they would be unlikely to ever be anything more than local clubs as they are in New York for example

Somewhat off-topic but I’ve always thought it a shame that no-one’s ever thought of resurrecting any of the long-dead OG ⚽️ clubs in Melbourne and Sydney; of course it’s not to be taken for granted that Balgownie/Adamstown Rosebud etc. are still with us but bc most of those clubs are Newcastle/Wollongong-based, it explains why they’ve remained out of sight&mind to the rest of the country(even within the ⚽🇦🇺 scene, never mind the ‘mainstream') for virtually all of their existence.

If you were being very generous you could argue that the wanderers somewhat pay homage to the oldest club in Australian history also called the wanderers and playing out of parramatta who took part in the first ever game to be played in this country v the kings school (a private school in parramatta). The name was party inspired by them

That was my thinking.... Using England as an example, many migrants from Cyprus and Greece arrived on their shores post war but the only Greek clubs founded there are small community ones, most of the newly arrived football loving immigrants walked straight into White Hart lane or Highbury and got on with football life... Those wanting a place to "fit in" did it in other ways not through football clubs. I suspect the same may have happened here if Soccer was the only game in town.

I always though that as well, especially at the time the NSL was being assassinated. I thought that if these new dawn people want new, "non effnik" clubs why not pour money into existing state league clubs with existing fan bases and a bit of history?

Thing is though, in the Wanderers’ case it literally doesn’t extend beyond the name; the OG Wanderers supposedly wore an all-white strip w/blue sleeve/collar-trims and blue Southern Cross patch on the left breast. That WSW haven’t once thought of using that as an away/clash/one-off heritage kit is rather telling, IMHO.

Yes it’s clearly more in honour of/a nod to the original wanderers rather than claiming it as part of a shared lineage. That would be good though tbh the idea of having an away kit or something honouring them. The club colours were chosen at the game forums

Well in the case of Melb/VIC it’s bc most of them are dead, LOL

The oldest-surviving one(Moreland City) claims to have existed in some form or other since 1916 - it’s my understanding they claim to be at least a spiritual-successor to the 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ethnic-club Footscray Thistle, but aren’t it in any case. Brighton and South Yarra have both been around since the 1920s, but the actual OG Melbourne clubs from the 1880s such as Carlton United and Melbourne United were driven to extinction by the then-VFA/VFL juggernaut among reasons of an economic nature.

Lowy wanted to take control and dump the Clubs/Admins/people he banged heads against not agreeing go his way.
What other clubs could have stepped up below the NSL back in those days and considering the kind of mess the game was dealing with head on on all fronts.
Lowy made everyone who was in SA redundant pretty much, he had his new model/had the rest did not matter whatsoever plus having little Johnny's blessing.

Sure, there is evidence that many of these clubs didnt recover post WW1 but many of the ones around after WW2 are still around.

Yeah not so much the clubs themselves but the investors putting money into them... Brighton Soccer Club like BA81 mentioned, been around, by then, for 80 years, if the Melbourne Victory license was given and money poured into them they would at least be a historied club

I think it was more about franchising and Lowy have control of the names, clubs colours, badges and branding because thats what they were making money off in the MLS and the greedy prick thought he could replicate here.

And as Ian Syson pointed out as a result of his research on the topic, WW1 was catastrophic for the ranks of 🇦🇺⚽️ as a proportionally-larger number of its players compared to Aussie Rules and Rugby League signed up for the war-effort before conscription was introduced. Yet it’s the 'traditional' codes that’ve been the beneficiaries of aligning themselves to the ANZAC mythology(Kevin fvcken Sheedy be damned👎🏼)😔

yes understand that - I don't know the early club landscape of Melb but I suspect Brighton would have been similar to for eg up here re Granville going back early 1900's.
Their oval was on Parramatta Rd was for all to see and was a major oval for games back in the pioneering days, even back in the 70's it was known - since that same park now is home to Granville Rage NPL Club.

I actually don't hink he really used MLS as the model more so his Westfields model, get the tenants to pay/cover costs recycle repeat.
Thats part of the problem - football isn't a shop front as we call it.
Look at retail long time brands disappearing to this day, its not a lasting product compared to a grass roots entity mind you nowadays some today are struggling feeling the pinch due to costs/lacking growth/getting swallowed up by a stronger one yaddaydda.,

who took part in the first ever game to be played in this country
Even the longstanding claim that the OG Wanderers vs. King’s School ⚽️ match in 1880 was the first-ever played in Australia is disputed nowadays, in light of the Cricketers FC vs. New Town FC match played in Tasmania the previous year, as well as a match in what is now Goodna, QLD in 1875 between a Brisbane XI and the warders/inmates of the Woogaroo lunatic-asylum😶

The WSW club-colours were chosen at the fan forums
I assumed the club-colours were the only thing retained from the prior, failed “West Sydney Rovers” bid led by Chris Tanner and someone else, I forgot who?

I would guess I am the only one who saw Woogaroo lunatic-asylum and wondered how Yoogali is going.

Get out of my head NicCarBel!

Weren't allowed directly into Wagga comp, so all the players and coach registered with the one Griffith team in the comp who would take them.

Two games to go - unfortunately Hanwood fell off a cliff mid-season, would have been a juicy finals series with them involved too.
