Summer of Cricket thread

Green and Carey have consolidated the innings at stumps. Carry on tomorrow guys and knock off the 67 needed to make the Deshies bat again.
I read one comment from an Aussie where he thought they are now in a good position!!!

Can’t remember who?

That Carey and Green will catch up the Bangers’ score, then set a target!

A lot has to go right!

Where are all the regulars?

Sharkman and his new user name, Hounddog, One Day Winners, Grazor, Reb Fem, LFC, etc?

I simply love the top end winter series. We’ve had a few Tas Crick beer viewings too.

So many orthodox lefties reap wickets with their arm ball. You would think a seasoned Test bat like Labuchagne could read it from the hand.
Good point.

I can’t identify the arm ball by eye yet. I need to be told it is by someone with more cricket insights like you, Richie.

Been wondering this myself.

After the Hazlewood destruction the day before and despite a superb Green century today the Deshies were too good in the end guys. Somewhat of a humiliation for the world champions. Selectors need to take most of the blame as our players were red ball rusty. Not the first time this has happened for an early season series either.

Bangers outperformed Aus in every facet of the game and in every session.

Rather than the Aus media focus on poor performances from Aus, like they always do, they should focus on good Bangers players.

Mahmud bowled well and consistently, with plenty of nous.

Mehidy bowled effective off spin - gaining loop, drift, and was unerringly accurate, featuring nice variations. He also batted well.

Apart from Aus being outplayed, it was a good game of Test cricket. It was good having a winter Test series in Aus.

In the media the players mooted to replace Weathers and Labu, are Renshaw and McSweeney.

From 6 Shield games last season, Renners averaged 50 from 6 innings. I think he was caught up with white ball, so he didn't play much Shield, which shouldn't happen. He was an impressive opener in Tests at only age 21. I can't believe he didn't kick on much earlier? I don't think he has been playing county cricket though.

McSweeney - I think I read he had a modest Shield season last year. However, he has been playing Div 2 County cricket and has had qualified success. He is aged in his mid 20s too.

Labu - he is an excellent fielder, has medium pace and leg spin options. It seems like other teams have worked him out with their comprehensive analysis computer programs.

Weatherald - the season before last Ward and Jewell's form kept him out of the Tas team two seasons ago. He had a big Shield season last season, but SA didn't want him a few seasons back. Might be a temporary form boost at FC level. Having said that, teammate Gabe Bell, finds him the most difficult bowler in Aus to bowl to.

Lyon - still a good finger spin bowler, but at age 38 isn't going to improve. Plus he is injured more. Given all of Rocciocioli, Kuhnemann and Murphy are good options aged in their 20s to replace him, I think the selectors need to act.
Another stat is that until the last 2 seasons, Lyon bowled 22% to 30% of overs bowled by Aussies in Tests. In the last 2 seasons it has dropped to 16%.

Boland and Neser are good back up pace options, except they are just too old aged 37 and 36.
Jhye Richardson is only 29, but has had injury issues, despite showing class.
Fergus O'Neill aged only 24-5, has taken plenty of recent Shield wickets, but is only marginally quicker than Webster. Plus he isn't tall. He has very little margin for error in his length.
Promising young quicks Beardman, Vidler and Charlie Anderson are all a bit too young and green.
Shield bowlers have told me the selectors like Trent Bartlett - another 130 kph bowler.
Tas express bowler, Riley Meredith, can be very quick, but in recent times has dropped his pace in the Shield to 130 kph. Mark Waugh is plugging him as a Test bowler. Meredith is only aged 27.
Nathan McAndrew has taken a lot of recent Shield wickets, but is aged 31-2.

For some older players, a few rarely let the team down despite being mid 30s and older.

Smith - batted well against Bangladesh. A legend who is still performing.

Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins - all amazing, but with all 3 mid 30s, it is a big issue. We need at least 1 younger paceman each Test, whilst rotating the 3 pace legends.

The most impressive aspect of Greens ton for me was his temperament, the way he was able to block out both internal and external pressure. A very mature knock. Is this the turning point in his career. Lets all hope it is because we need him to lead the next generation of Test batsmen...

Spot on. From the very first ball when Pat Cummins called incorrectly and sent us in on a green Marrara Stadium pitch. The only sessions the Baggies won where when Josh and Cameron did their attempted rabbit out of the hat tricks.

Charlie Anderson
I dont think he is too young DC. Starc picked at his age as was Hazlewood, but he suffered a back stress injury which delayed his Test debut for some two yrs. Along with Richardson, Morris, Hardie, Bartlett and possibly O'Neill to lead the next generation of bowlers, am hoping CA is also tempted to pick Charlie Anderson, left armer Campbell Thompson and Mahli Beardman in our bowler rotation over next 12 mths. Boland and Neser have done their job admirably, is now time for a few younger guys to be part of a fresh new bowling group to take us into the next 15 yrs...

Never any doubt Josh Hazlewood is still worthy to be part of the first choice Aussie attack. Can not believe some in the media were prepared to debate that.

This was written by a News Corp scribe and he is spot on.
" Hazlewood put in a sustained spell of probing excellence. He kept the pressure on all batters with subtle movement that kept finding the edge.''

well, what a time to show up in here !
I recall the last time vaguely losing to this minnow many moons ago - was embarrassing enough but I can't believe this is even worse !
Reminds me also way back when Murali/Sri Lankan ripped us @ the Gabba long ago.

WTF going on Richie !
They bang 426 1st innings !
6/55 by Mahmud ! 9wicket haul all up.
Seems @ Darwin they felt right at home ?! wicket seems as so.
Interesting Richie Richardson was the Match Referee - he must have been luving seeing us "owned".

Let us hope it is the turning point.

A ton made under great scoreboard pressure.
