Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

That extra week delay for the cup tie should mean we get Lopez and Lampard ready.

We can go all out against City this weekend.
Totally agree.

We go on into the Melbourne City Youth fixture with an unchanged starting line up to that against Fremantle City. If Lampard or Eliopoulos are available, then you bring them on for 10-15 mins to get their match fitness up. No need to rush any player back unnecessarily.

We’ll need to play the match against Bergers with a heavily rotated starting line up. I’m not interested in defeating Bergers. We have bigger fish to fry.

Hmm. Maybe that licence will stay in hibernation until Canberra men's is ready?
Everyone will play their games, its only normal, difference this time round as opposed to those other times, is the club has more clout and will make more noise and its no skin off ours if it doesnt happen (but there are more ppl listening now!) ..We continue as is..

Truth of the matter is, yes we always want to play top tier whatever thats is, and we deserve to, but it wont be at any cost and we will not bend the knee to anyone! We remain committed to getting to p&r in the right way for us, and everyone else with true aspirations, and a second tier remains the best vessel for that....

Just a quick look at what effect a small announcement has had on 'stakeholders and racists alike' dredging out all those fears resulting in recycled prejudices veiled in concern for a league on life support and handouts!

Let Canberra etc pay $20 mill why havnt they to date? Bc they cant and even if they did, it will end in unpaid debts and they will fold... the problem is the model as we all know, but kets all stay on the path that is the very definition of insanity!

We have more important things to focus on, best they dont distract us so we can focus... .

EXACTLY this.... well said.

If we lose to City we may actually have to beat the Bergers, a win or at worst a draw this weekend is a must.
Agree - we go hard and get the 3 points over Melbourne City Youth to ensure our spot in the top 6. Preston will defeat Dandenong Thunder and Hume is likely to knock over Heidelberg.

It just means that with the Australia Cup quarter final being played between the Heidelberg and CS George Cross matches, we will need to really utilise the full compliment of our squad.

Well said

This time around, we are in a much stronger position than we were were 6 years ago.

Loved ... feared... hated .... but never ignored.

Id be positioning myself on any pathway that means playing hume in the semi... if if meant gettjling bergers also in the qf it would be a guarantee of grandfinal for us.. they have to be the 2 worst in top 6 by country mile!

If the APL actually had a list of pre-requisites that all current and potential A-League clubs need to meet, I can't imagine a single thing that South Melbourne wouldn't pass. On what criteria could they reject South?

Hey, don't be so radical and suggest transparency... that'll get you in trouble 'round these parts. I agree 100% though - if they set criteria that South can't currently meet, there'd be a few A-League teams who couldn't either, and they'd have to explain the double standard.

Same criteria they have used the past 4 bids....... something about blah blah blah we need to make our money back and:

"We must make sure that any new licences do not compromise the marketability or integrity of the competition"

"The time for change is now upon us, " Di Pietro said. "Decisions made now will affect the future of football in Australia for years to come."
And it was only downhill since then.

"We must make sure that any new licences do not compromise the marketability or integrity of the competition" – a clear reference to the fact that the league, in this phase of its development, cannot afford any fiscal failures or clubs going broke, as has happened in the past.
Ha ha! Whoops!

I suppose Di Pietro didn't choose Western United. But damn it's embarrassing seeing how badly they all fumbled the ball from then on.

Here's an interesting bit of contrasting information:

South, who need only gates of 1500 to break even at their 13,000-capacity Lakeside Stadium, believe they are a model in the self-sustainability.

That contrasts starkly with Melbourne City, who need crowds of 14,000 per game to break even on their AAMI Park deal.

That was from a 2017 SBS article, so not sure of today's figures, but I imagine attendances above 5000 per game would generate around $100k in profit, assuming $25-30 per person between ticket and food/drinks.
