"Can you smell the fear?", do the other football codes in Australia (AFL,NRL), genuinely fear football?

Just seems like a rebrand of what already exists - I'm not sure any of these teams are new?

That would be my memory too. I worked for a guy called Ross Lindsay in 1980 - pre Swans. He was the President of the Hills District Australian Rules Football Club and may have actually been behind the whole competition back then. These teams for the most part seem to be the rebrand you mention.

Yep - the main ones I recognise are East Coast Eagles and the Uni teams - all were part of NEAFL in 2013 when I was interned with devil. The league then was essentially a merger of AFL Sydney, and AFL Canberra.

What a c0cksvcker that councillor is👎🏼

Having said that, if Flogari’s intended angle here was to bash RL, it’s pretty rich given he has no qualms about fraternising w/that bloke’s AFL-❤️ing counterparts south of the Barassi Line.

I have heard that BS many times over the years.
If it ever held water, it certainly hasn’t done so for many decades.

I can’t help but think that the reason it ever came to be believed at all was due to the theoretically-larger proportion of Anglo/skip Aussies playing ⚽️ at junior-level(be it informally or not) compared to senior-level. And that perception had a flow-on effect upon pop-culture here, w/examples like an episode of Skippy and that ad w/Mark Skaife in the early-2000s.

I have taken the stance of that post as bashing governments/councils for how they perceive other sports - not the actual sports themselves

Even if so, it still doesn’t let old-mate Vincenzo off the hook.

Interesting article/opinion piece about concussion in sport, especially AFL.

What the AFL must do to concussion-proof players and the game

“The problem is, Australian football has the highest concussion rate of any team sport in the world (Complete Concussions Canada 2025). Further, researchers report it has the highest number of significant head impacts per player per match of any team sport at 29, while rugby and American football both have 14.

Australia is lagging other developed nations in minimising sport-related traumatic brain injury (TBI).”

“Australian parents are voting with their feet. In 1990, soccer, basketball and AFL had about the same number of participants in Australia. Now soccer has three times as many players as AFL and basketball has doubled.”

Children are at ongoing risk with AFL junior rules stating there is “full tackling and bumping” from age 10.

The medical science freight train is about to hit the AFL: by 2029, CTE will be able to be diagnosed in living people, including children.

bet the AFL wish's concussion was the major topic in their game the last week !
Sorry for the Professional female performers but dam luving seeing the swans/afl smashed from pillar to post - no cross bars skies the limit !

Agree but ironically on ABC Radio 702 though the it is a big story the forthcoming Swans double header is getting a lot of publicity-AFL never miss a trick.

true dat - NCB their W game is prior Mens.
Funny thing is on current affair last night interviewing swan supporters, they all said turn up for the W game and depart upon completion haha hope so.

Its funny, all the Sydney-siders are talking about AFL all of a sudden? Watch their crowds get even larger now... People LOVE to be outraged.

Oh I thought it was a double-header something physical from what I heard today

Are the big women's rights protest groups going to turn up to AFL matches? Well played AFL!
About as much as the anti drug driving lobby is going to turn up to a Volpato game I guess, but the fact is, in Sydney, a city that claims to ignore AFL, the AFL is both the front and the back pages of the newspaper...
