That worries me. Segecic and Triantis only ever played for Australia until they didn't. We're in a fight for players from our diaspora from smaller European nations. I'm keen to see us more strategically lock down our dual nationals.

Thanks for sharing re: Shimokawa. I think he'll have a hard time breaking into Victory seniors.

How hard can you go, though? For most players it's a question of the heart or one where they assess which option provides the most opportunity. Push too hard and you can lose them. Provide false hope and you hurt the broader pool.

The only ethical way I can see is to make the NT set up as professional, successful, nurturing and healthy as it can be. Demonstrate that this is where you want to be, not where you are locked in to.

This is where Tony Popovic needs to ensure he builds a strong, positive culture in camp that keeps players eager to commit. This is the most excited I’ve been about the national team since 2006. If Popovic continues to give youth a genuine chance and maintains a great environment, there's every reason to believe more dual nationals will choose to represent Australia.

However, a clear concern is losing players like Triantis and Segacic after they've already spent time in camp. Hopefully, Popovic learns from these situations—and given how Cristian Volpato’s switch was handled ahead of the World Cup, he just might have.

I suspect that had very little to do with the coaching staff and much more to do with one of his teammates.

Yeah I agree. It's hard to get a full picture from the outside but I suspect we weren't as good at the bolded as we needed to be.

A few examples. We weren't in as regular contact with Segecic as Croatia were, so our support wasn't as strong. There was inconsistent selection criteria in the national team e.g., Milanovic/Hrustic over Segecic, when he was in the broader squad. He was in better form. Triantis flew his family over to watch him debut and he wasn't selected in the squad, after featuring in pre-game promotions.

I don't think it was that their hearts weren't with Australia. I think their hearts can be in two places. But we didn't handle the situation well so they left.

Personally I disagree. If the Socceroos are to be strong then surely a kid on City’s bench isn’t what we need. Even Lyndon Dykes wouldn’t start for us anymore (though he could’ve been a squad player).
