To be fair they’re on Seven so SBS isn’t promoting it much in the same way that the only World Cup coverage on Seven is news stories and a couple of Sportsbet ads.

It starts tomorrow at 5:00am AEST. It’s being held in Glasgow thanks to Victoria fucking up.

Yeah I didn't even know until yesterday when I googled it for myself. These were the games the sporting capital of Melbourne couldn't handle. Good on Glasgow for stepping in later.
 
So far the King, Queen and Sir Chris Hoy have come out of a Doctor Who phone box and “God Save the King” has been sung.
 
Gabon are making their Commonwealth Games début. Gabon is a Francophone country colonised by France which is unusual for a Commonwealth nation. Togo are also making their début, despite also being Francophone and never being part of the British Empire (Germany then France colonised them).

So far we’re still going through the African countries in terms of athletes walking out. They’ve sent varying numbers of athletes.

Just for those unaware, these are the countries and territories at the Games:

  • Oceania (13): Australia, Cook Islands, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Norfolk Island, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu
Notably, a few Anglophone countries with close British ties (most notably Ireland and Zimbabwe) aren’t in it.
 
This edition only features a few sports thanks to the Victoria fuckup. Those sports are:

  • 3x3 wheelchair basketball
  • Artistic gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • Boxing
  • Judo
  • Lawn bowls
  • Netball
  • Para-artistic gymnastics
  • Para-athletics
  • Para-lawn bowls
  • Para-powerlifting
  • Para-swimming
  • Para-track cycling
  • Swimming
  • Track cycling
  • Weightlifting
Every sport except netball has men’s and women’s tournaments. Netball is still women’s-only, even though men’s netball is absolutely a thing.
 
All the nations are out, and here’s the Loch Ness Monster. Also a fair few Scottish instruments like the bagpipes and the harp.
 
I refuse to see the Commonwealth Games be seen as unimportant in their own right. For many Commonwealth nations is a chance to perform well and a springboard for the Olympics or World Championships. Of course many sports have bigger events than this but it's a good test to see where people are at in the cycle and there's a lot of goodwill to go around. It's important to have a variety of interesting sports.

It’s definitely important! I wish they hadn’t cut down the number of sports though. There’s never been football either but I kinda get that, even though the other international games events have it (e.g. the Francophone Games).

Nah. It is losing its popularity mate.
Still we brilliant Aussies almost always dominate and it is a good stepping stone for Los Angeles '28 for our athletes.
 
Bummer being on other side of the planet as it is usually middle of the nite when our guys and girls will be competing. But fear not as 7 Plus have a superb replay set up.
 
The scaled back games have gone from 280 events in 2022 covering 20 sports and 24 disciplines to 215 events and just 11 sports. Like the last few Comm Games para events are integrated and part of the total events medals are battled for, eg athletics 43 able bodied event and 16 para athlete events.

The 5 able bodied events that are at Olympics and world champs but not at these Comm Games are both men's and women's there are no marathons and no 4x400m relays, and no mixed marathon walk relay.

The 1500m has been replaced by the mile and the 20km walk is now 10km.
