For comparison, should probably look at something like the IRL World Cup Final in 2021 or 2013 when it's held outside of Australia...

Assuming IRL means International Rugby League, good old Wikipedia tells me the 2021 final was on Fox Sports only, with a viewership of 150,000 people.

As a side note, I don't know what to make of the fact that more people in Australia tuned into the world cup final than the Socceroos games.

I dont think it means anything more than that people value spectacle over loyalty. Many watching the WC final may not have even known that the Socceroos were in the tournament that lead up to it.

Oh wow - I thought was on 9 or 7 for sure (I remember 7 had the rights for one of the recent ones)

It's the World Cup Final, it's always going to be like that. The Grand Finals in NRL/AFL (and NFL's SuperBowl) all get the highest ratings of the season, but there's 15, 16 and 30 other teams that miss out on that match, and it's not the same conversation, is it?

I don't think people are that dense surely?
Sadly many are mate... Do you think people that flock to AFL Grand final parties every September here have any idea what is happening on the pitch or what teams are playing even? Or the people passing out in the birdcage at Flemington can tell a filly from a gelding?

Ask 10 people at work who Irankunda, Bos or Popovic are and 9 will look at you like you are an Alien, yet 3 weeks ago they were waving their Herald Sun scarfs around at federation square.

Eh what a world well I think the best mindset to have is maybe be open minded. Like I know nothing about basketball and cricket I wouldn't say anything positive or negative about either I'd just listen or not mention it.

I really have no idea. I think those who watch the final at 5am - 8am on a Monday morning are football fans. I struggle to see (or understand why) that (a) there is a large number of those people who are football fans that would not watch the Socceroos games (inc. games that were on at a decent time on a weekend) and (b) the number of people who fit into the first category is significantly higher than the 'house wife' population that will watch the Socceroos as it is the 'thing to do', or an act of national pride.

It may simply be that being a Monday morning meant that most people watched at home on their own TV and not in gatherings, which made the viewership data appear higher.

Without doubt over 5 million, which started at 5:00, is beyond expectations pre tournament in fact I looks likely the 104 games will get close to 150 million.

Unimaginable as I said pre tournament... Sadly the ratings will probably result in SBS lossing the rights next time
