2026 WAFCON

Wild that Morocco are hosting this gain. Third time in a row. Didn't even change the logo from last time. They've unlocked the key to constant qualification.

It’s pretty ridiculous that they get to host it again. They literally hosted it last year. I know Africa probably doesn’t have the best facilities but surely they could give it to someone else.

As hosts and being a fairly strong side by CAF standards, they not only have a good chance of making the World Cup (since the four quarter-final winners go through) but they could very well win the whole thing. They came very close last time against Nigeria (being 2–0 up only to choke and lose 3–2). Nigeria are also obviously a strong side though, I mean they one conceded three goals at the last WAFCON (two in the final and one against Banyana Banyana/South Africa in the semis), plus they do have 10 titles for a reason.
 
TBF, there's probably not that many nations capable of hosting major tournaments. But this begs the bigger question. Where is all the money that Infantino promised? CAF keeps voting for him for the promise of investment, but I don't see any of it.

Even when Zim was barred by FIFA, they offered barely any help and support.

The money likely goes to the suits, who I’d say keep it unfortunately. Corruption is unfortunately a massive problem in Africa.

Another thing to note is that Jorge Vilda (Spain’s controversial coach who oversaw the 2023 World Cup-winning side that became subject to Kissgate) coaches Morocco. Player welfare clearly isn’t a big deal in CAF.

I'm well aware of African corruption. It's so sad though, because they could genuinely have amazing infrastructure and world beating teams.

The Vilda thing was annoying because it happened somewhat soon after the whole saga, and it was just like, "how tone deaf are you". I guess the desire to win was more than the weight of morals
 
Algeria got the job done 2-0 over Senegal and Morocco ran out 4-0 winners over Kenya on WAFCON opening day to get the first set of fixtures underway.

Expected those results. Morocco will be one of the favourites for the whole thing and Algeria are a decent side as well. Senegal really has to catch up in investment. Kenya should be stronger too.
 
Lots of controversy already. Africa really needs change, socially and financially.



Edit: looks like it’s playing up but basically ESPN Africa are complaining about attendances for non-Morocco games even though they and many other networks didn’t even bid for the broadcast rights, there’s barely an and Esther Okoronkwo was robbed at her hotel and because she called it out was racially abused.

Huge upsets from Malawi and Tanzania! Barbra Banda showed her class for Zambia, as did the Chaŵingas (Tabitha and Temwa) for Malawi!

Matchday 2

  • Morocco 1–0 Algeria
  • South Africa 2–2 Ivory Coast
  • Burkina Faso 2–1 Tanzania
  • Egypt 1–3 Malawi
  • Nigeria 1–0 Zambia
Hosts Morocco got the win over rivals Algeria and look like the strongest team so far! I think winning WAFCON would mean their players would get good moves! A few already play in France and Spain (often diaspora).

Nigeria back to winning ways in a huge clash, Malawi still going strong! The match between Malawi and Zambia should be a cracker; if Malawi avoid a huge defeat they could go through to the knockouts on their début!

Ivory Coast started well! South Africa managed to come back but they’re starting really badly. If they recruit diaspora I think they’ll be stronger, I just hope they don’t take Anna Rasmussen from us cause she’s class.

Yesterday, Cameroon beat Ghana 1–0, while Mali beat Cape Verde 3–2, with Cape Verde scoring their two first ever WAFCON goals.

Earlier today, Senegal surprisingly drew 0–0 with hosts Morocco while Algeria beat Kenya 2–0. As expected, Morocco have won Group A and Algeria have finished runners-up, meaning they will go through to the quarter-finals while Senegal and Kenya have been eliminated.
 
South Africa won 1–0 over Burkina Faso while Ivory Coast beat Tanzania 2–1. Both winners will advance, with Ivory Coast having won the group and South Africa having finished runners-up. Burkina Faso and Tanzania are out.
 
The fairytale continues! Despite losing 2–1 to Zambia, Malawi are THROUGH to the quarter-finals on their tournament début and are just one win away from their first ever World Cup spot.

Meanwhile, Nigeria finished runners-up after a massive 6–2 win over Egypt. Despite winning two games, Zambia have been eliminated from WAFCON and will miss the World Cup, as will Egypt.

I reckon Malawi will beat Ghana. That would be huge given it’s their WAFCON début!
 
Cameroon got the job done 1-0 over defending champions Nigeria in their WAFCON quarterfinal to qualify for the Women's World Cup for the first time since 2019 and make the semi-finals, where they'll face hosts Morocco whilst Nigeria progress to a play-in match against South Africa for a place in the interconfederation playoffs.

HUGE upset! Nigeria AND South Africa in the playins after underwhelming starts to the group stage. No Zambia at all.
