General A Leagues thread (Men and Women) 2026/27 season

Horrible draw for the Jets , no home games between 31 October and 9 January. and then SEVEN straight home games. Hard to build fan engagement with 2.5 months between home games.

I appreciate it is not the fault of the club or APL, and rests purely at the feet of the quality of local politicians we have. When no money is put into the sport, and we don't have the infrastructure, this is what happens. No idea how all the other scheduling at MJS will impact Champions League fixtures, but can see it causing real problems.

Aren't Newcastle one of the host cities for the Rugby League World Cup?
 
Dub fixture release day has been confirmed for next month following the successful sale of Canberra United to new owners from Capital Football, with the comp having ten teams as it stands given the uncertainty surrounding the Central Coast Mariners women's team and Western United remaining in hibernation for season 2026-27.

i always have wondered if adelaide dodged a bullet with ross not buying the club.

I met and had a brief chat with him at the offices when he was close to purchasing AU, in that brief chat i got the vibe of a very arrogant man

Perth have been an absolute disaster under his stewardship

Holland and Portugal have done this with their leagues (the Vrouwen Eredivisie and Liga BPI respectively) that are already pro. The problem is we don’t have pro/rel unlike them, so how do we decide who stays and who goes? If they just pick X and Y to stay and Z to go then fans of Z would be furious.

I could possibly see it working if:
  • We had two leagues with six teams each: A-League 1 and A-League 2.
  • Pro/rel between the two leagues, with one up to Dub 1 and one down to Dub 2.
  • Each team plays each other four times: once at home and once away. That makes 22 games, which was what the WSL was in England until the upcoming season (which has 26 games). There’s also little variation with European leagues unlike the men’s (26+ vs 48+).
  • A simpler finals series with the top two going straight to the grand final. Canada has playoffs for the top four in the NSL which has six teams but personally I think four out of six teams making finals is too easy.

We won't be able to implement promotion and relegation in the Dub until there's a women's Australian Championship though but for now the priority should be achieving full-time professionalisation then thinking about creating a women's equivalent to the Hahn Australia Cup.

I was implying that if we split the Dub into two there could be pro/rel between the two. Otherwise I can’t see how we’d get a six team league since it would be unfair. If, for example, Sydney FC was the only Sydney team then Wanderers fans would be furious and vice versa, and rightfully so.

Who do you envisage being in division one and who would be in the second division?

There's no point in splitting the Dub into two divisions and subsequently implementing pro-rel though as we can still achieve a fully professional ten-team comp without the need for contraction.
