Say "we will take the highest bidder" each time. The less restrictions on tbe bid the more u can drive up license prices by supply and demand. Then distribute the license fee and fund the league like the yanks do

You just reminded me of an article in The Economist magazine about 20 years ago. The gist was that American football is socialist whilst European football is ultra capitalist.

It is weird but makes sense since you have to use the best ideas when in more brutal international competition. And to be fair, it isnt as simple as capitalist v socialist. The english system mimics welfare state capitalism. It uses the best ideas from both and removes the worse

- free markets as your base (open pyramid)
- bottom heavy democratic governance
- regulations to avoid exploitation (aka not paying payers)
- redistributive welfare state (30 percent spent on grass roots)
- public sector for public goods (coach education)
- regulations to avoid systemic risk (fair play)
- no central planning.
- mostly avoiding regulations to "lift quality" which tend to backfire
 
Every team in the mens has a good ownership model finally.
There are No Excuses for the Apl not to replace WU with other candidates. They are out there.
 
If there are groups willing to invest in the A-league, starting fresh is the model. Some key questions and answers though:

Is Western Melbourne a desirable area for a team - Yes
Should a professional team be using ironbark fields as a training base - Yes
Are there other regions of the country that deserve a team (Sunshine coast, Wollongong, Canberra) - Yes
Does there need to be another rectangular stadium in Melbourne - Yes

This might sound strange but I'd be looking at building a new stadium in Albion. There is land right near the station on Ballarat Road, which is about to be redeveloped as part of the airport rail project.

That's a site I would be looking at and its central to the western suburbs.

Tried to find it but even at only 20000 you need a decent footprint - where exactly are you looking

Between Ballarat Road, Railway Line, and Ring Road. It would've been a much better location to base a team out of within the western suburbs, both in terms of centrality and the popularity of football within the area (acknowledging there's already a lot of people around there who mainly support Victory already).

That seems to be a really long term project and the plans seem to be around a basketball/netball/futsal stadium with grass fields outside.

Yep, exactly as Oranges mentioned.

Would have been perfect. Seems they may have missed the boat with the other development mentioned in the shared article.

Imagine being able to get to the stadium via train and via the ring road. It would have been easier to access a potential stadium there than it is to get to AAMI Park.

The APL wanted nothing to do with the FA in order to get the TV rights that included Western United even though they had nothing to do with it's creation. APL have had WUFC for several years so they can own it during the good times and bad. Why they're hanging on this gangrenous limb so hard is a mystery to me.
