Poppa Out

I think Poppa has earned a tilt at the Asian Cup. I hope this WC is a stepping stone to something better.

That said, what is the point of a lock-out if you can't demonstrate a reliable route to goal? I'm not worried about style at this point, just a viable approach to winning games.

Playing players in their correct positions and not taking off players who are in form/having a good game is a pretty decent start.

One of the KPI's HAS to be a style of play that promotes the best facets of our game. My worry is the FA don't have any technical KPI's because there is no TD at the helm to steer that decision making process.

This is the worry full stop for 10+yrs
What have the FA done looking ahead.
There has never been a long term plan.
No vision.
No nothing but make sure to qualify the WC.
20yrs ago no diff.
Same same style of management.
If I ran my business like these mugs I’m broke for what typically happens - your opponents invested - set plans - targets and employed people to take your directives to plan and your left behind.

I recall there was the announcement of the Spoiler or whatever re Merrick.
Seriously what a waste of space.
I’m sorry for our promising players - your under guidance by a lame duck.

dont think anyone is expressing tika taka for obviously we are no where to that level - people just wish to see some kind of attacking intent instead of relying on pressure release valve counters.
You keep sitting back forever your own gates break open more than not and just get over the finish line.
I dont expect tiki taka i expect at least can pass the ball like Uzbekistan or Scotland or Austria

Has Merrick won in court yet?

I mean the whole thing was a balls up from the start.

Is Heather Garriock still running the "technical department"?

I was wondering WTF happened to him; I assumed he returned to Spain ages ago. By all rights he'd have either been Auckland FC's inaugural coach or managed the All Whites by now.

Someone said it earlier - focus on creating better players. If everyone in your first 11 is good enough for the top 5 leagues then you’re a chance of going deep in a WC. No World Cup has ever been won by a team of Championship level players regardless of the system or who’s got the best coach.

Exactly why is that so important? And please, no Hansonite-esque jingoism to 'justify' your opinion.
Answering for myself here rather than the OP. I don't think it is so important but I would prefer it. I just think that there are huge benefits in the familiarity and cultural alignment that come with a local, not to mention the exposure and growth for local coaching talent. Guus broke new ground, but no import since has been any more successful than the locals.

I've calmed down quite a bit.

Defence first? Fine. Haram football? Fine. But man put our best player in his best position and play to his strenghts.

I really feel that If Irankunda plays on the wings and Yengi or Toure start, we score multiple times and win against Egypt. They were so beatable.

I agree with Poppa earning a tilt at the Asian Cup. If we get knocked out by anyone bar Japan/South Korea, then he needs to go. I'm saying this as someone who is not a fan of his style of football.

Tactically, we executed a great game plan against Turkiye. After that performance, I wouldn't have made any changes against the USA but he did and we looked poor. I'd be curious to know why he made those changes but I don't think we will ever find out. In regards to a whole team approach, I felt like we definitely could have been more proactive in our approaches against Paraguay and definitely against Egypt. Egypt looked like a very average team and were there to be beaten. This is even before I begin to dissect why he played certain personnel in certain positions, e.g. Irankunda as the central striker against Egypt.

Long term, Australian football has to decide what sort of football nation it wants to be and create a plan that we stick too. Our jump from one style to another shows that the people in charge don't know what they are doing.

That's not the purpose of the senior mens' national-team coaching job, my friend. Like, at all.

Yeah has been unlucky, took a job managing in the Russian second division and the war broke out, was an assistant for a while, managed a club in the Philippines who I think went broke? lol. Now a TD at an Indonesian club.

I agree, but it is one benefit - lifting up the Australian game as a whole. I think the benefits of having someone emotionally invested in the project and familiar with the culture are more important. But at a cost benefit level, did Verbeek or Van Marwijk offer anything more than Postecoglou or Arnold at a results level? No, but I can bet the KNVB accreditation came at a premium.

I'm not against a foreign coach, but I think the locals have plenty more top offer longer term. Some time ago, Bielsa was available. I was all for it but we got Berger instead . I've changed my tune since then.

The fundamental considerations for most sports are.

1. Defence has to limit the opposition to less than their attack can score.

2. A coach is rarely braver than the level of player skill that they trust is consistently available.

When a coach is timid, he doesn't trust the talent. Sometimes he is wrong.

More talent can allow Australian coaches to be braver. 1-2 players is all it can take change this, combined with a natural progression of the squad.

Put Haaland in the Australian side, we would have gone deep into the WC.

I'm prepared to offer him citizenship, he looks Aussie to me :)

If there is no short-cut, winning at the top starts at the bottom. How are we devloping players aged 14-18? Some promising signs in the current team.
