Socceroos vs Egypt - 2026 World Cup R32 - Sat 4th of July 4am AEST

IMO the main issue for Australia is a lack of skill and depth.

We went backwards in the game when our subs came on. The Egypt subs were much better and swung momentum in their favour.

And our execution in attack was fairly ordinary most of the game.

Whoever the coach is they need more talent to work with.

We do get too defensive at times, but we created enough half chances that a more skillful team would have turned into goals.

Egypt were the better side, but we are not far off the starting lineup was good, we just need better depth.

I'm just embarrassed at how casual and wasteful we were. It's 9n Popovic but the players also need to go for it. There was the great ball to Hrustic then his cross was blocked. Toure was also slow to cross when Mabil was in a good position.

I have a feeling Poppa has zero idea how to coach attacking football, as in, he simply has no idea how. He’ll be very focused on where defenders should stand, when to press, when to double team, when to jockey and when to go for the tackle, but in attack I think he just shrugs and says “ try to score when you get up the other end”.

Toure is not up to the level.
Don’t know what all the Norwich fuss was about. He was anonymous all WC. However the good thing about having him on the pitch is that he enables Irankunda to move to the sideline. I’d like to see how Archie Goodwin goes in the MLS and if he starts regularly, he should be in the squad.

He's not Bos but he was like and NFL cornerback defending his area.

Massive squad balance stuff up. We needed some more wing backs. Robertson sorely missed.
Ultimately Trewin was 4th choice RWB and playing out of position. We lost Lewis Miller, Italiano and Bos to injury.

However I agree that our depth is weak when we get to this stage of tournaments, but primarily in attack. In the last two games there was no one to bring off the bench capable of scoring.

That is my take on the game.

On most sports a team builds it's game on defence, becuase teams that can't defend always lose.

We had 3 of our better attacking players out and ultimately 3 others couldn't last 90 mins.

Aside from a few of individual moments of brilliance in attack we didn't have much threat all tournament.

We should have been more potent of corners, but barely executed.

2-3 more attacking players with speed, skill, instincts, and vision would add a lot to the team.

I was unimpressed with all of the guys who came off the bench this game.

If a guy sitting on the bench thinks he deserves more chances, then when he comes on the field, is the time to show his worth.

It is great that we have unearthed so many good young players, we have 4 years to find the next batch.

IMO many of our fans and commentators seem to think that some of our players are a lot better than they are. If they are that good, the WC is the perfect opportunity to show that.

For example, the US team was way better than our team when it really counted.
