NPL 2026

There is room to make a bigger grandstand but don't really need it at the moment. St George don't get massive crowds.
Yes I know St George don’t get the crowds, but it could have been a different type of venue as I say and it might have been an option for Olympic in a venue sharing arrangement like they once had with St George many moons ago. Even if had been more like Sutherlands ground etc etc.

Is this the old St George Budapest club or the St George District Association team?

Goal on debut for panos armenakas.

Has been said before but it’s unfortunate the redevelopment of Barton park (formerly St George stadium) resulted in such a drastic reduction in capacity. It’s nice, but the grand stand should have been rebuilt atleast a little bit bigger, something akin to ilinden or the like. Could have been a good boutique venue, maybe even another option for Olympic, but as it stands it’s too small. I wonder if there’s future capacity to extend/expand the grandstand

From what I heard last year St George already wanted to knock it down and rebuild it

The development should’ve replicated the old staduim with the Hill used aswell the complex has lost its soul now

As I’ve said before, imo playing out of a more boutique venue would do Olympics match day experience the world of good and would provide them a base to rebuild from. Belmore and kogarah are arguably too big for even most a league clubs these days and just feel cavernous and empty outside of maybe grand finals
I think a club like Sydney Olympic need to have a permanent facility to train and play games. It would be difficult to share the facility with another club.

Their youth and women's teams are playing at the Crest. It isn't the greatest venue but if they put some seats in and fix the change rooms/entrance to the venue, it would be a drastic improvement on what they have at the moment. They could play games inside the stadium and train outside. I just think it would be better for the club to have everyone together at the one venue. At the moment, they train at 2-3 different venues and then play games at the Crest/Belmore Stadium.

In any case that’s just me giving my 2c/free advice to the club. These are practical realistic solutions to their long term homelessness problem. It doesn’t have to be the biggest ground in the world, just a decent boutique venue which doesn’t feel cavernous for smaller games but has the capacity to cater for bigger games. Look at bt connor at Preston for example, it’s not the biggest venue but it’s widely considered to be one of the better ones in the aus championship. Preston themselves could probably support a bigger venue but for most nsd clubs that venue is in the capacity sweet spot I outlined above. Stick Preston at belmore when they were at their lowest ebb and I dare say the matchday experience would have been, maybe a bit better but pretty dire too. Olympic need to stop squandering opportunities, have a bit of imagination. no reason why they couldn’t have jumped in when the refurb of St George was in the planning stage, just not being proactive/being caught on their heels
