FIFA WC 26 - Other Nations LIVE Match Thread ⚽

Broken down by region it gets more interesting:

AFC (2/9):
  • Central Asia: 0/1
  • East Asia: 2/3
  • Middle East: 0/4
CAF (9/10)
  • Central Africa: 1/1
  • North Africa: 2/2
  • Southern Africa: 1/1
  • West Africa: 3/3
CONCACAF (3/6):
  • Caribbean: 0/2
  • Central America: 0/1
  • North America: 3/3
CONMEBOL (5/6):
  • Andean States: 2/2
  • Brazil: 1/1
  • Southern Cone: 2/3
OFC (0/1):
  • West Pacific: 0/1
UEFA (13/16):
  • Central Europe: 3/4
  • Eastern Europe: 1/1
  • Northern Europe: 2/2
  • Southern Europe: 4/4
  • Western Europe: 4/5
Iran is Central Asia

Where do we think the next few spots would go? I assume UEFA would get the bulk of them. Surely CONMEBOL doesn’t get any more, otherwise their qualifiers are basically redundant.
For me the entire Americas need to be combined and have something similar to CAF qualifying. That said, there will be plenty of spots for nations like Costa Rica to have a fair chance at qualifying.

I see merit to both sides of the argument of merging CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, but it definitely makes more sense than a combined AFC. Asia’s just too big, too populous and has too many time zones to have one confederation, without even mentioning the blatant corruption in the AFC.

For 64 teams, they would most likely give the bulk of the spots to Africa and Asia, especially in the hopes of China qualifying. Then likely a few more for the rest barring South America and Oceania who both would get one extra spot.
My thinking is something like this:

20 European teams
12 African teams
12 Asian teams
8 North American teams
8 South American teams
2 Oceanian teams
2 Intercontinental Playoff spots (between Africa, Asia, Oceania and North America)

I heard though that in preparation for the next World Cup there’s talk of all South American teams being in 😑

This 💯
Combine the Americas and split Asia into East and West

Just because a Korea side run by a dysfunctional KFA and various mediocre to minnow nations failed? If anything it proves why East Asia should have its own confederation, since two of the three East Asian teams got out of their group and none of the Arab teams did (nor did Uzbekistan).

What we’ve really seen is that CAF is stronger than people think, whereas CONCACAF only has three good teams and that oil money and naturalised foreignera haven’t done heaps to improve the performances of Arab states (Qatar are definitely better but still crap, Saudi haven’t really changed at all).
Don’t forget, beyond Australia, Japan and Korea, the rest of East Asia failed to qualify against the other Asian sides who were at the WC. Based on overall quality, it could end up with East Asia having 4 spots and West Asia having 5.

The rest of East Asia just isn’t good enough and we know that. Maybe Indo but China and pretty much all of SEA are terrible. What that shows is that Japan, South Korea and us are the best nations in Asia (with Iran and Saudi behind them).

Similarly I could argue that CONCACAF must suck because none of the Caribbean or Central American countries qualified.
