Given the ages of some of our defenders, Miller will still have a role to play but it should be as a reserve for the back 3.
 
We have just qualified (pretty easily) for the knockouts, with the youngest first 11 of any country. Let that sink in.
This is potentially the best opportunity we’ve had to build for a future WC for a quarter of a century.
I am happy with what Popa has done so far but I’d like to see him seek some experienced input on how to develop this squad over the next 4 years.

Nothing would've been worse than a lame exit here with the idea that this group will be better or more ready in 2030. I want to experience as much as possible while it's available as we don't know what injuries or issues will happen over the next 4 years.

It might be good to get someone in like Muelensteen to help out. Mix-up the assistants with some different voices.

I think Wilkshire knows a bit more about it than Basheer. If you are going for 1974 players then Alston is the one to pick rather than Abonyi. No way is Aloisi a better centre forward than Viduka. Aloisi was only ever a replacement for Viduka when Viduka was unavailable.

I'm saying underwhelming performances that leave us questioning. 2018 was an example.

Could have worked. Viduka was quite good when playing as a striker pair but we mostly used a single central striker in those days (still do).

Yeah I recall. It's always been a what if for me.
 
For me a best xi has to be a compromise between playing the best players and who compliments who.

Viduka has to play, but that means you have to have players that can play the ball to his feet when he is facing forward, like he got at club level. The only cams we have had that are good are holman and mcgree. The two games i watched where we had him and holman on the park at the same time, it was like watching the same viduka i saw for his club.

You have to play cahill at 8. But that means you have holman and cahill in midfield so you really need a creative player at right forward to help with build up. Metcalf, mcgree, bresciano when he got old and volpato are all candidates. Its a really tough choice. Ill go volpato based on potential, but lets see.

The last player to pair would be lucas neill. At least for now he shades circati at rcb, but he lacks height and needs to be paired with a taller cb for balance. His height was a constant issue against uruguay. Bonus is to get another set piece threat. Candidates are burgess, souttar, herrington. Another tough choice because souttar is right footed. Burgess has had too many errors leading to goal. Maybe ill go herrington based on him playing lcb and also his potential. So these arent the best individuals in an xi, but its an xi designed to compliment our best players, with a couple of tough positions based on potential rather than performance to date

Just a big what if this Egypt game. Poor coaching decisions and idiotic. They were poor as were we but we had moments we we had to be ruthless.
 
A few retirements coming. Some depth there with the older guard if an injury crisis happens but we need to clear out the deadwood.
 
Our last shoot out loss was Japan 07. We beat Uzbekistan and Peru. I just wish we'd gotten a free hit in the next round.
