I’d say it’s to stop players from saying really ugly and hurtful things (i.e. slurs and bigoted derogatory comments), either to fans, officials or other players. It makes sense in my opinion, players should grow balls and say it if they think it’s okay, then face the appropriate consequences if it’s not.

I mean, bullies should be suspended. I have no problem with that at all.

But this isn't like that. The rule is that you can't cover your mouth while confronting another player. All the players were told it would lead to a red card. Almiron could have called him a mean name without covering his mouth. It was reckless in the extreme. He fully deserved to be sent off just for being so stupid.

Yeah I think this is what I meant mora @ClockworkOrange - it's obviously been brought in because there's no way they can effectively punish/work out who said what - so this is meant to just stop it at the pass. It is a little stupid, but is really the only way they can do it - short of putting a microphone on every player.

Ref cams with sound? Like how cops have them? Ref cams are thing in some leagues.

But the law says it is not ‘automatically’ a send off. Totally subjective rule. Hence stupid rule.

Because they are empty shots from range. The Turkey game style was obvious before our game. Wing-heavy team and if they get locked up they just resort for long shot after long shot. Exactly what happened.

may/will - oh well. I guess that leaves it open for if the referee can actually hear what is said in that instance, and it doesn't warrant any punishment.
