Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

As I’m watching the replay:

- The AL needs more teams to lift the Squeezing intensity when the other team has the ball. The AL teams in possession have too much time on the ball, compared to teams like Turkey, Japan, Ven, Squeezing the life out of us in the middle third of the pitch. We can’t keep the ball well enough.
Difficult to do that when the league is played in the summer months.
Also another reason why we need a longer season as well.

True, Barca.

Maybe in night games and in Southern Aus earlier in the season. Whatever, we need our players playing in less time and space with the ball.

Looking at the replay for the first goal, Arda Guler was too busy having a sook that his volley was saved to pick up Okon-Engstler. He started pointing at his teammate to do it, who obviously couldn't it time.

If Guler likes to think he is "much better than us", he should probably learn how to fucking mark his man.
I watched post game of the Indian coverage (I think) It was more in depth than what we have haha. Anyway they point this out. The ball Okon played is a vertical long ball with almost no angle. These are exceptionally difficult passes to make. Even a little bit more pressure on him would likely mean it was over or under hit.

Another astute point this reviewer made was that Iran often didn’t get in a line in the supposed 5-4-1 with the DMs, Okon and O’N, whilst Metcalfe did.

Good observation.

So Metcalfe often moved quickly from the 5-2-3 to the 5-4-1, when T had the ball and progressed their build up, whilst Nestory stayed in a line with Toure.

Not sure if this was deliberate?
If iran is irankundas nickname, it explains why the us government thought iran had weapons of mass destruction

As I’m watching a replay another thing T got wrong tactically.

- They continued to Full Press and Squeeze intensively.

Instead they should have sometimes Half Pressed trying to draw the Aus 3 person defensive line well away from the Aus goal. Given Aus some easier possession.

The Turks didn’t try to win the ball at all as a team unit, well away from the Aus goal with all Aus outfielders high up the pitch, and, to have to turn and chase and defend facing the Aus goal.
I actually thought turkeys press was the weakest we have faced in 2 years, full of holes

It WAS, as for them not trying to win the ball as a team unit..... not sure a team with 80% of possession NEEDS to win the ball...
72%, a better press means you are winning the ball in a high area against a defense that hasnt set. It also meant we could give our defense a breather at times by knocking the ball around the back

Hahaha I was rounding up...

Thanks for the definition but Turkey HAVING possession negates them having to WIN possession, its an oxymoron. Popa GAVE them the ball and kept the full backs tucked in with Devlin and Okon screening the inside run... The Turks had no choice but to try and "crack the nut". Tis was the game they anticipated getting 3 points from. They could have BPO'ed themselves (or any other jargonay bullshit phrase) themselves into oblivion they still would not have stretched us out of shape...

I disagree that the poor press didnt matter, even at 72% there is a big difference to the concentration required as that number climbs. I mentioned before the match that their poor press was something we could exploit by giving our defense a breather. It also means they miss out on one of the only times they can have the ball high on the pitch when the defense isnt set. As u say, once the defense was set, it was a hard nut to crack

I think we are talking at cross purposes bud. The Turkish poor press was indeed a boon for us but they were criticised for NOT winning the ball back when we were high up the pitch. It was pretty obvious that our game plan and excellent execution of said plan did NOT ALLOW them the ability to do this... we were high up the pitch 3 maybe 4 times and scored twice...

When we play backwards facing football teams press successfully against us because we never force them to defend their own half.

Huge difference against Turkey where we did turn to face forwards - both with vision and intent.

I think Turkey expected the first tactic and got messed up when we looked past their press often enough to make them have to cover their backdoor properly.

Force 3 to 5 players into a defensive mindset and you are not streaming forward with 9 players any more.

Turkey were not at fault for not succeeding in their press - we worked past the press for once and played positive football on the counter rather than simply pissing round the backline with a long boot at the end.

Credit to Popa for that.

Absolutely

Johnny Turk- Anzac spirit:

"I'm from Turkey. Congratulations on your win yesterday. It was a completely deserved win. The biggest architects of our defeat were Coach Montella's plans and Captain Hakan's condescending attitude towards the opponent. Especially Montella's decision to play Arda Guler in the right wing instead of midfield and wrong substitutions were fatal mistakes. Kenan Yıldız should have been started from the begining. Anyway It is very difficult for us to qualifed top 3 in the group in now. I wish you success in the upcoming matches"

Australia vs Turkey Full Match Tactical Cam

Wow. Any idea about this page? Not that I care about the rules but might they have needed permission to set it up? Is this perhaps a company doing it at many matches?
