World Cup 2026 Australia thread

European tournaments start with a dull opener, then a couple of nostalgic ones on the first weekend. Summer is here and people are in a better mood. Day 4 is returns to a number of dull games. It's not as great as it's made out to be.
The All Whites get their World Cup campaign underway against Iran on day 4 of the tournament though, with Graham Arnold's Iraq facing Erling Haaland and Norway the following day.

I'm talking about UEFA Euro continental tournament and how they're narrower and dull once the honeymoon is over.

Key player: Ryan Mendes

While many Cape Verde key players originate from the European diaspora, their most influential figure is a homegrown talent. Ryan Mendes, born in the city of Mindelo, is the nation’s all-time leading goalscorer with 22 strikes and their most-capped player with 94 appearances.

Currently playing for Iğdır Futbol Kulübü in Turkey, the 36-year-old veteran operates primarily as a right winger. Mendes possesses excellent playmaking vision, frequently drifting centrally to create numerical advantages or staying wide to isolate defenders.

His discipline also aids the team defensively, but his main value lies in his final-third production. He is adept at entering the penalty area and converting loose balls into scoring opportunities.

If Mendes were to miss time, the team would lose its primary attacking outlet and most experienced leader. His absence would significantly reduce their threat on the counterattack.

Would you mind bringing all this stuff over to the non Australian threads?

I'm now going to make the assumption that Uzbekistan (Being the lowest ranked of the unplayed nations from Pot 3) do not do good enough reach the Round of 32, and the 3 losing teams in third place so far eliminated alongside them, which would now leave a knockout stage of:

Germany v Brazil
France v Netherlands
South Korea v Canada
Sweden v Morocco
Croatia v Colombia
Uruguay v Austria
USA v Qatar
New Zealand v Algeria
Scotland v Japan
Ivory Coast v Senegal
Mexico v Spain
England v Norway
Argentina v Saudi Arabia
Australia v Iran
Switzerland v Belgium
Portugal v Panama

Third places Netherlands, Brazil, Belgium, Qatar, Spain, Norway, Algeria, Panama
