Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

Thought there was a lot of solid effort in defence, great position and organisation. There some also amazing moments of technical skill, can't remember the player, maybe O'Neil?, who turned and skinned the turkiye player who then fell. The back 5 worked very hard, but our inability to often hold or move the ball meant we were constantly under the pump giving possession back again. Transition wasn't always great, especially with long clearances. through the centre. Using width and a lazaridis like wingers helped. Needed someone who could hold and distribute fast, is volpato that? Bos I think it was who wasted a great chance to pass, instead skying a curling shot when I think irankundu was in the middle unmarked. We did have the advantage in height at corners, but often the ball was long. I think Soutar got his head to one of them once.

I see it now. That bounce deflection was from Circati keeping his arms to his chest and bouncing off it. Was concerned they check for a hand there.

Late shot against Bos hand not given. Correct call. Way too close

The improvement of the teamwork and individual players from recent sleep-fest first halves to today's Victory in Vancouver is amazing. Where did this new O'Neill come from? How come our passes are suddenly sticking? Okon mature beyond his years? Suddenly we have a functioning midfield!!And we're suddenly brave with nice team cohesion? Sure now that cunning fox Popa has been foxing. Yes it wasn't perfect, but that's the beauty of it: there's plenty of room for improvement. Bos had an ordinary game by his standards, we'll have had the longest time together o f probably any previous campaign to further improve cohesion, and our morale and confidence is stratosperic. I'm still dazed tbh

Am rewatching the match now (where I can hear the comms)

I love you Basheer, but I think for the USA match that I’m going to watch at home, I’m going to chuck Simon Hill on SEN over the top instead.

Wilkshire with absolutely no emotion on the first goal

Great result, the Socceroos beat a very strong Turkish team, but the USA are going to be tougher. I was impressed at how well the Socceroos defended, and their counterattacks were excellent. To be honest, I thought Turkey was going to thrash the Socceroos, this is one of the best Socceroo performances I've ever seen.

I think you have specialist keeper skills, PJ, like Keeper 66.

How do you rate Beach’s shot-stopping compared to Ryan’s?

Ditto Keeper if you are reading this?

I can evaluate keeper’s sweeping skills and ability to command the box, bur despite a fair bit of goalkeeper accreditation, I’ve always had specialist keepers train goalies I’ve coached.

I thought Beach’s save where he palmed the ball onto the post, Ryan might not have reached.

I think Maty would have got it - he is incredibly agile.

To the bigger question I think Maty is still the better shot stopper but it is close. Maty also have the big match temperament over the other two. If Maty concedes he realises that there is nothing you can do about what's past. Both Izzo and Beach are very much confidence keepers. Beach will be over the moon at the moment and I can't see him being dropped.

The point is less technical more mental.
The problem comes when they concede. If they think they are at fault they second guess themselves. I have seem then both collapse (particularly Izzo). But to use a fotmob or sofascore analogy - they can both put in more 5.0 and 5.5 performances than Maty and also have higher performances than Maty.

At the end of the day Maty is the more consistent performer at a higher level week in week out.

I'd like to see Beach overseas in a tougher league where he plays more and has the chance to test himself consistently. He is still very young and will develop his mentality by performing consistently. Somewhere like Belgium would be a good league for him now.

All the headlines Australia shock Turkey. Yeah sure but now that we've won it makes a lot of sense. You have a team hobbling through UEFA generally only good at home against a team that travels to the harshest pressure driven locations and has their own stock of talent with a top class defensive system.

Damn I saw the thumbnail it can't find it. There was a gopro ground level shot of the Irankunda goal. Not on YouTube by the looks. Was it Twitter? Want to see it.
