Socceroos vs Turkey 2026 World Cup match thread 🇦🇺🇹🇷

O'Neill's fitness concerns me.
We can't be taking a risk with fielding Aiden O'Neill in the starting XI for our group stage opener because Turkey will be playing with a lot of intensity and are going to run riot round our midfield, and if he gets injured again then he might well be ruled out for the entirety of our World Cup campaign.

I'd play Devlin but I'm not confident Popovic will.

Turkey officially changed their name to Turkiye. A bit like Burma v Myanmar. Holland v Netherlands. Swaziland v Eswatini. It's not cringe it's just their name.

Little wonder they wanted to change.

Turkey: A large, heavy-set bird in the genus Meleagris. It is native to the Americas and features distinctive featherless, wattled heads and necks.

Turkey: Used to describe something that completely fails or flops (such as a bad movie or play).

Turkey: Derogatory slang for an inept or stupid individual.

Yep.

I mean Turkey is the English language name rather than some colonised version and this was also to do with Erdogan trying to make Turkey the Ottoman Empire again. What's in a name I suppose?

Games in Seattle and San Fran should probably have reasonable temps too, albeit the Seattle game has a noon kickoff.

This.

We're not playing in LA, Miami or Houston.

Seattle and Vancouver in June are like Melbourne in December. Generally pleasant and warm but not peak summer yet, and without the risk of extreme heat days like in Melbourne.

San Francisco is even cooler.

The weather will be fine.

One of the key things that I think we have for us is our x factor this time around.

Last world cup... we kinda had the same gameplan we do now. Defend, be compact. That was kinda it. We somehow managed to get a couple of goals despite no real plan to attack whatsoever and our defensive stability got us through.

This time around. Even if we are getting completely decimated in terms of possession I can always see us POTENTIALLY scoring at any time. Souttar from a set piece. Irankunda with a an amazing run or just a rocket of a shot outside the box or a free kick. Toure has potential. Volpato coming in. We got some pace in this side as well.

I feel like we have much more of an ability to come up with a play from nowhere this time around compared to 2022. Which has me feeling cautiously optimistic.
