Official South Melbourne Hellas thread 🔵⚪

SMFC can't remain a members based club AND get a license... unless members are hoodwinked into giving up control of the club ala Sydney Olympic... Any hero trying to squeeze this through will have a fight on their hands.
yeah that would surely be a sticking point if APL have no flexibility

ABSOLUTELY!! I reckon I MAY have been convinced about 10 years ago. NO WAY THIS TIME!!!

I agree... no concessions anymore, not even 1... its as is or nothing!

Look a lot of members want this desperately and are willing to make all sorts of concessions to bring Hellas back to the national stage.. We have to respect that and accommodate every members feelings about the issue and ABOVE all do what is best for the future of our club...

If EVERYONE agrees that this is what we should do then I will bite my tongue and follow the wishes of everyone I just think it is very important that we ALL get a say in our future direction... We have to be very vigilant over the coming months, an EGM can be called very quickly and voting down very slyly...

It shows that SMFC is starting to gather enough attention that the APL wants to cash in on that. I feel like this is their early attempt to divide and conquer the building momentum behind SMFC, Preston, Marconi, APIA (and/or it's designed to use SMFC to generate other bids for the WU license as others have contended).

I have no skin in the game here, but I hope that SMFC hold fat and continue to lead the efforts to make the Championship what we all believe it can be. That is, something that generates enough attention it forces a rethink at FA and APL. Then maybe they can come back with a model that allows something like an associate member license for clubs that want to retain their member-based status and forego buying a (totally lucrative...cough...) equity stake in the APL, have the option to do so.

Side note regarding the costs, ie as far as any need to buy in... i figure $15mill is too high, they owe FA and by extension the rest of us $14+ mill.. we buy license for token $1... and we even with their technical monetary write off...good business makes for good friends! Lol

Exactly this...... but its that old adage of "fool me once"....or in our case 3 times... lol

Spot on !

Something that rebelliousfeminist974 said in the Football Australia thread in General Football was promising:

The assumption is that the new licences which last ten years would supersede the existing A-Leagues club licencing which currently lasts eight years with Australian Championship sides also being given those licences, and with regards to expansion the APL needs to sort out the situation regarding Western United and Canberra United first before thinking about adding more teams to the comp.

I'm not sure if the 'assumption' is by people in the know who may have more insight than us plebs, or just amongst the uninformed on this forum. The optimist in me wants to believe we're at an exciting time and a few amazing announcements are about to happen. But there's been way too many false dawns and missteps for me to get too excited and be disappointed, yet again.

But I take this latest news in a cautiously optimistic manner.

I don’t mean to shit on APIA, I want them to do well and I’ve attended many of their games just to support traditional clubs. But I still want to see them back it up again this year and see how the wests group arrangement plays out longer term before I’m prepared to put them in that category. I think Sydney united would have just as much claim as them if not more. Again, it’s been a long time since they’ve been in the national league, add another decade on top of Hellas and Marconi’s extended absence. And Hellas and Marconi were both still willing and able and when they were pushed out, they have different strengths as clubs but both are proven to be strong and sustainable year after year over decades. APIA were forced to drop out on their own accord in the early 90s. Again, I’m not saying they can’t do it, they’ve done well in recent times, I just want to give them a bit more time to see if they can sustain their recent gains

Thanks for highlighting Sydney United. I should have included them in my list. Their community engagement this year, from my comfy YouTube account, has looked excellent. I’m excited for what they can deliver in this years championship.

Good call on APIA. Hopefully the Wests group are committed to the long term.

There’s several non-foundation clubs that definitely look like they’re building towards being modest professional clubs. I feel like if the FA and APL don’t strike now, they may lose this golden period of money being invested into the NPL and traditional clubs.

SMFC, like it or not, have become the leader in pushing for reform. I’m hoping they hold the line and continue the important job they’re doing.

Agreed. Also remember APIA have to rent out Leichhardt oval where as the other clubs listed own or have long term leases on the grounds they’d play out of. Anyway apologies to all for derailing the thread

If you were the apl and wanted to shut the gate on "old soccer" you could do worse things than bring SM into the closed shop tent and shut the gate behind them.

Its disgusting but i suspect its a combo of the apl wanting to rid itself of the stench of WU and put a hammer blow into the championship by taking one of its flagship clubs.
It could likely be the death blow of the APL if that's the course they choose to take. I hold out hope that they see the value in the authenticity that traditional clubs bring, and how that now, more than ever, people are craving something authentic and real to be feel connected to.

Again, a lot of water to go under the bridge yet, but this would be the key thing. Would hellas getting in be a sign of change, does it signal an opening of the door to other traditional clubs being able to aspire to the a league, or is it as you say is it designed as a one off, one time only settlement deal

Here is a thought from left field, that is a win win all round...FA & Smfc $15 million to be paid for the license (not to the APL) on the proviso that the whole amount is put into a kitty for the setup and running of a proper second tier.. this is to fund the expansion of that league from the bottom up.
