Is Avondale really that bad of a club?
The problem is that they very quickly rose from relative obscurity because individuals with deep pockets put their own money in. The club didn’t find themselves where they are on the field organically. They’re reliant on those individuals continuing to put their money in to remain at that level, if they pull out, the club will likely plummet down the divisions again back from where they came. It’s not a sustainable operation, they don’t generate their own cash flow. They’re a suburban club with wealthy benefactors, and their level of support/interest reflects that. Just by association from being in npl amongst traditional clubs there’s an assumption they have history, but they don’t, most of their existence they’ve been about as historic as the local Sunday league club down the road. And as I’ve eluded to in the past imo there’s questions to be asked re their motivations for all of a sudden putting that amount of money in without any obvious financial return. It’s not a proven, consistent, durable club built over decades like other strong npl clubs.

How much did western and MacArthur pay again? It’s funny because they’re obviously trying to follow the mls model of charging more and more as the league grows..except as the league has grown there the licenses have grown in value, here they’re arguably less valuable than they were before

Auckland paid between $20-$25m for that licence I'm pretty sure

You really need to auction one license a year to the highest bidder to do that

Wun and macarthur werent technically a mistake from a cold blooded view, mls have sold some duds but still walked away with the license money after the club crashed

The buggest mistake was saying the license needs to be in 2 specific areas which drastically reduces the number of people willing to auction.
