2026 World Cup Squad

Massive chance for Devlin to make it his breakout tournament. He was good this year come on cammy
Hopefully Cam Devlin's remarkable form at club level for Hearts translates to his performances for the Socceroos during the World Cup as he'll be a valuable asset in midfield for us throughout our campaign.

The Leckie selection still stinks and was made worse by performance.
The press conference will be a good opportunity for Popovic to explain himself with regards to why Leckie made the final 26-player list and the rationale behind picking him for our World Cup campaign this cycle ahead of other players who would arguably be much better options to fill the positions he plays in.

Boyle over Leckie would have been better actually.
Over a sustained period of time, Boyle has had poor stats in a diversity of game based criteria.

Conversely, the old Leckie, of a few years back, excelled in everything - except scoring goals.Maybe Leckie didn’t anticipate teammates’ attacking interplay as well as teammates either.

In terms of body on body, tackling and heading 1v1 duels, he is way ahead of Boyle. Leckie caused a muscular presence against the best opposition ball winners in their defences. He tracked back just as well as Boyle too.

Boyle has been completely outmuscled by opposition defenders for some time.

I think leckie is there purely for the press. All that time in Germany he became an elite presser he understands how to close the passing lane, how to curve his run, understands triggers and how to press intelligently.

We miss this with mo and nessi on together they still need time to develop that part of their game.

I’m sure Popa will argue experience.

A lot of our young talented tyros lack big game experience - integral for most players in a WC team.

I'm a bit late to the party because I woke up late, but I'm impressed with the final squad! Surprises me that Martin Boyle and Kye Rowles were dropped, this woulda been the former's last chance. Nice to see that Cam Devlin and Tete Yengi weren't overlooked though!

I was surprised Rowles has been omitted, having had plenty of recent game time?

Conversely. Popa has kept Devlin in the squad, who has had no recent game time! This surprises me?

Even though Leckie brings experience to the Socceroos from previous World Cup cycles he's past his prime and we can't afford to have a similar situation with Leckie as the Matildas are having with Emily van Egmond in terms of their continued selections heading into the culmination of a major tournament cycle.

Feel for Martin Boyle, he missed out on the squad again given he got injured in the 2022 edition.
It might be he's last chance of making a World Cup squad as well given he's age.

Tete Yengi is a big surprise, he's come out of no where to make the squad and it will be interesting to see how he goes.

It'll be good to see how Tete Yengi runs in the forward line during the friendly against Switzerland and whether he can prove himself to be a viable option for us heading into the World Cup and beyond.

I like to see him start too, agree let's see what he is like and how functions into the team.

Apparently he's more of a target man, pressing forward type too so more in the mould of Duke although much more younger.

Which is why they have to turn a new page for the Asian Cup and play a younger generation, even it means not winning the Asian Cup it would put us in great stead going into the World Cup in 2030.
